WORCESTER, Mass. – Meghan O'Donnell's milestone goal early in the second half paced the Brown field hockey team to a 1-0 win over Holy Cross at Hart Turf Field on Wednesday night. The Bears improve to 9-4 overall while the Crusaders drop to 3-14.
The Winchester, Massachusetts native now sits atop the Brown record book with 37 career goals, eclipsing Tara Mounsey's previous record of 36 set in 1999. O'Donnell also moved into a three-way tie for first on Brown's all-time point list with 87 career points.
Shannon McSweeney (Boxborough, Mass.) recorded her third shutout of the season and fourth of her career to improve to 9-4, while Kat Matchett suffered the loss to drop to 1-9 for the Crusaders.
"That was a hard fought battle against a strong Holy Cross team," said Head Coach Jill Reeve. "We had some excellent efforts by many, especially Leah Zavalick and Ashley Waldron, whom had outstanding performances."
The teams battled through the cold and rain during a sluggish first half in which the Bears and Crusaders combined for just six shots. Hannah Rogers (Los Altos, Calif.) had the best looks of the first half as both of her shot attempts were on target, however turned away by Matchett.
Just 1:04 into the second half, the Bears got all the scoring they would need as O'Donnell's shot from the right base line found a seam past Matchett to put Brown up 1-0. McSweeney made three of her four saves in the second half, including back-to-back saves against Maureen Connolly and Katy Cronin with just over five minutes to play.
With Alexis Miller sent off with a green card and Holy Cross removing Matchett in favor of the extra attacker, Brown weathered a late Crusader charge to escape a wet Hart Turf Field with the 1-0 win.
Brown returns home on Saturday for a key Ivy contest versus Cornell on Goldberger Family Field beginning at noon.
