Providence, R.I. - Brown head men's lacrosse coach Lars Tiffany announced that senior defenseman Will Swindell (Greenwich, CT), senior midfielder Tim Jacob (Palo Alto, CA) and junior goalkeeper Jack Kelly (West Islip, NY) have been selected tri-captains for the 2015 Brown Men's Lacrosse team.
"There were many good options in this year's process, and both seniors and juniors were intensely reviewed and discussed," said Tiffany. "The traits we demand in our leaders are found in more than just the three men selected. Our staff fully expects all of our newly selected captains to carry the burden of serving as difference-makers who will make team-first choices that propel this program to a new level this spring."
Jacob, who started four games last season, ranked seventh on the Brown team in scoring with 13 points, netting 10 goals and handing out three assists. He registered hat-tricks in wins over Quinnipiac and Marist, and scored two goals in games against Harvard and Bryant.
"Tim Jacob is a senior midfielder who exemplifies the qualities Brown Lacrosse prides itself on," commented Tiffany. "More of a leader by example, Tim is as gritty and tough as they come. His teammates recognize this undeniable all-in intensity he brings to skill sessions, practices and games. Tim was on the first-line midfield last season, and in 2015 he will again spearhead much of the offensive initiation."
Kelly led the Ivy League and ranked ninth in the nation in saves per game (11.21), and ranked 15th nationally in save percentage (.547). He made a career high 18 saves in a victory over Quinnipiac and registered 16 saves in wins over Hartford, Marist and Princeton. Kelly started all 14 games last year and nine games as a freshman.
"Goaltender Jack Kelly is the first junior captain for Brown Men's Lacrosse since 2003," said Tiffany. "It was also a goalie the last time it occurred: Michael Levin '04. How does a junior earn the title of captain? Jack's teammates look to him for guidance, knowing he is the fiercest of competitors amongst them and the man that focuses them on achieving success and raising the program to the next level. In the cage, Jack has been a field general since day one of his freshman year at Brown, barking out directions and motivating positive, spirited play. A two-year starter, Jack will once again be between the pipes for Brown Lacrosse in 2015."
Swindell played in all 14 games a year ago, earning seven starts, and picking up 19 ground balls, including four each against Providence, Yale and Cornell. He also caused three turnovers for the Bears last spring.
"Will Swindell is a senior defenseman who has been a contributor throughout his entire Brown career and a starter in 2014," said Tiffany. "During the voting process, his teammates praised Will for his level-headed and respected voice as a leader, including being given the title 'Papa Bear' by one junior. Will took immediate ownership this semester, directing the team's September activities. On the field, he is a voice that others have come to depend on."
The timing of the vote for the Brown Men's Lacrosse captains changed this year. Instead of voting at the end of the spring season, the program waited until October. This move allowed the freshmen to have a say in their leadership, and it gave everyone more time to reflect on the choice at hand. Each man gave his vote in a face-to-face meeting with Coach Tiffany, with the task of justifying each selection. Actually five years of Brown Lacrosse student-athletes had a vote as the recently graduated class of 2014 was polled and their choices counted in the final tally.
