
Columbia Defeats Brown 65-60

Providence, RI- Columbia's Judie Lomax scored 23 points
and grabbed 18 rebounds to help lead the Columbia Lions to a 65-60
Ivy League win on Friday night at the Pizzitola Sports Center. The
Lions improved to 13-6 on the year and 4-1 in the league, while
Brown moved to 5-14 with a 2-3 mark in the Ivy League.
Both teams came out fired up and ready to play, as the lead changed
11 times and was tied seven throughout the game. Lomax netted 14
points and brought down seven rebounds in the first half to lead
the Lions to a 34-33 halftime advantage. Brown's Lindsay Nickel added 10 first-half points and helped Brown gain as much as
a nine-point lead, but Columbia rallied back to edge Brown by two
in the final minutes of the first stanza.
During the intense first half, a layup by freshman Sheila Dixon
gave Bruno an 11-9 lead eight minutes into the game and a three by
Nickel gave Bruno a four-point advantage a few minutes later.
Another trey by Nickel boosted the score boosted Brown's lead
to 19-13, but Columbia's Mary Beato nailed a three to cut the
Lions' deficit to three just a minute later.
Nickel continued to score for the Bears and increased the
team's lead to 25-18 with back-to-back buckets, but the Lions
came back again and brought it within one with 3:42 left in the
half. Columbia's Melissa Shafer put in a three to regain the
lead, but the Bears got it right back after two free throws by
sophomore guard Hannah Passafuime.
Nickel started off the second half with a three pointer to take the
lead, 36-34, but the Bears went scoreless for the next four minutes
to allow Columbia to gain a 41-36 lead with 14:38 left in the
game.
But the Bears scored the next four points of the game to cut their
deficit to one at the 13:28 mark, as Christina Johnson followed up
with a put-back and get fouled. She made the free throw to give
Brown a 45-44 lead, but Columbia scored back-to-back buckets to
earn a 49-44 advantage with 9:39 left.
Sophomore Linday Steele drained two free throws and to cut
Brown's deficit to two, but Columbia went on another run and
pushed its lead back up to seven with 6:23 remaining in the
game.
Steele hit a big three with 3:33 left in the game to bring Bruno
back within three, and two free throws by Christina Johnson brought
Brown within one at the 2:40 mark. Nickel netted a jumper in the
corner to give the Bears a one-point edge with 2:07 remaining, but
Lomax hit a jumper from the top of the key to regain a one-point
advantage.
Columbia had a 61-60 lead with 26 seconds left in the game and the
Bears had possession of the ball. Bruno had a chance to tie or take
the lead, but missed two free throws allowed the Lions to rally and
win the game by five, 65-60.
Christina Johnson led Brown in scoring with 17 points and pulled
down a team-high seven rebounds, as Lindsay Nickel followed with 15
points and four rebounds. Also scoring in double-figures was
Passafuime with 10, which included eight-of-10 shooting from the
free throw line.
Lomax led Columbia offense with 23 points, followed by Sara Yee
with 13 and Melissa Shafer with 10.
The Bears are back in action tomorrow night when it takes on the
Cornell Big Red at 7:00 p.m. tomorrow night at the Pizzitola Sports
Center.
