Army Topples Brown, 59-51

West Point, New York - Julian Simmons scored 15 of his game high 16 points in the second half to rally Army to a 59-51 victory over Brown at Christl Arena on the West Point campus.

Army extended its record to 10-4 overall, and continued its mastery of the Ivy League, winning its fifth game against the Ancient Eight without a loss. The Bears fall to 6-10 overall.

Two freshmen were at the top of the class for the Bears, led by Tucker Halpern, who netted a game high 13 points with seven rebounds. Classmate Andrew McCarthy (photo right) had nine points and pulled down a game high and career best 12 rebounds, while blocking four shots. McCarthy's four blocked shots rank eighth best in Brown basketball history.

The Bears played the majority of the game without senior All-Ivy center Matt Mullery, who was injured early in the first half and did not return.

The first half was played at a frenetic pace with the Bears adapting to the Army bump and run style. With 10 lead changes in the half, Brown grabbed a 28-25 lead at intermission. Junior Steve Gruber's jump shot gave the Bears a 26-25 lead, while freshman Andrew McCarthy gave the Bears a three-point lead at the half with a late lay-up.

Bears' junior Garrett Leffelman gave Brown a six point advantage, 39-33, on an inside basket with 14:02 remaining.

Trailing 42-39, Army went on a 9-0 run to pull ahead, taking its first lead of the half, 44-42, on a trey by Julian Simmons, and extending the lead to 48-42, on a driving lay-up by Marcus Nelson with 8:40 left in the game.

The Cadets led by as many as 10 points in the second half, 59-49, with 1:09 left to play.

Leffelman and junior Adrian Williams scored eight points each for the Bears.

Josh Miller also scored in double figures for the Black Knights, scoring 14 of his 15 points in the first half, and pulling down a team high seven rebounds.

Brown plays its final non-league game of the season on Monday, January 11, traveling to Hamden, Connecticut to face Quinnipiac. Game time is 7:30 p.m. at the TD Bank Sports Center.
