
Yale Avoids Sweep, Tops Bears, 71-63

Providence, Rhode Island - Yale senior guard Alex Zampier scored
22 points to lead the Bulldogs to a 71-63 win over Brown at the
Pizzitola Sports Center, and gain a split of the season series with
the Bears. Both Brown and Yale are 7-12 overall, 1-1 in the Ivy
League.
Brown senior Matt Mullery did all he could to keep the Bears
close, scoring 19 points on 7 of 13 shooting from the field, and
grabbing nine rebounds. Bears junior guard Garrett Leffelman tossed
in a career high 15 points on 6 of 12 shooting from the field,
including 3 of 4 from behind the three-point arc.
Trailing by 10 points at the half, 37-27, the Bears came roaring
back in the second half and pulled to within one point of the Elis,
55-54, with 6:55 remaining on a lay-up by Mullery.
Yale pulled ahead by six points, 66-60, with 1:12 left on a
Zampier 15-foot jump shot. Brown answered immediately on a
three-point play by Mullery to pull to within three points, 66-63,
with 53 seconds remaining. But the Elis finished strong by scoring
the game's last five points to nail down the win.
The cold-shooting Bears fell behind early, 12-2, after connecting
on just one of their first seven field goals. While the Bears
shooting improved slightly in the first half, Brown still trailed
by 10 points at the half, 37-27. Brown's Mullery and
Yale's Greg Mangano each had 10 points at intermission.
Freshman Tucker Halpern scored just six points for the Bears, but
grabbed 10 defensive rebounds, while handing out three assists.
Zampier's 22 points came on 7 of 15 shooting from the field,
while he added four steals. Mangano finished with 12 points and a
game high
Brown continues its home stand next weekend, getting into the
thick of Ivy League action by hosting Princeton and Penn on Friday
and Saturday, January 29 & 30, at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
Both games start at 7:00 p.m.
