Brown Swims to Fourth Place at Bucknell Invitational

The Brown men's swimming and diving squad
placed fourth at the highly competitive Bucknell Invitational over
the weekend, compiling 1025 points over the three-day event as a
number of swimmers turned in impressive performances. In an
exceptionally close meet, four teams were separated by just 106
points, ranging from La Salle's fourth with 1019.5 to Columbia's
second at 1125.5.
The Bears led things off on Friday in the 200 free relay, finishing
third in one of the closest races of the meet. Brown crossed
the line in 1:24.21, just .02 seconds behind La Salle, and .08
seconds behind Princeton in a true photo finish. Junior Ryan Kikuchi kept things going in the individual events, turning in a
third of his own in the 200 IM with a time of 1:53.45.
Senior Tucker Wetmore earned another 27 points for Brown in the 50
free, placing third with a time of 21.07. After barely
earning a spot in the A Final with a 21.39 in the semis, Wetmore
turned in a clutch performance in the final, improving his time by
over .3 seconds. Wetmore and Kikuchi then teamed up with
senior JD Pinto and junior Conor Carlucci in the 400 medley relay,
as the foursome took another third with a time of 3:25.12.
Bruno wrapped up the Friday action on the diving boards, as senior
C.J. Kambe turned in his best showing of the season, earning an
impressive score of 304.30 to place second in the one-meter
dive.
Bruno continued to perform well on Saturday, starting the day with
a third in the 200 medley relay, as Wetmore, Kikuchi, Pinto, and
Carlucci again combined for a 1:33.20. Kikuchi then improved
on his previous individual performance, turning in a 3:59.57 in the
400 IM, good for second overall. In the 100 fly, Carlucci
earned the first gold for Brown, improving his prelim time by
almost a full second to take first with a time of 50.11.
In the 100 breast, Brown turned in one of its most impressive
performances of the day, taking two of the top four spots.
Carlucci again swam well, placing second in 57.01, followed by
sophomore Timothy Juhn, who turned in one of his best showings of
the season by placing fourth in 58.51. The Bears showed off
their depth again in the 100 back, as Kikuchi and Pinto took second
and fifth, finishing with times of 51.76 and 52.88
respectively. In the final event of the day, Kambe produced
another solid diving performance, racking up 296.45 points to place
fourth in the three-meter dive.
On Sunday, Kikuchi was at it again, taking another second in the
200 back, crossing the line in 1:51.77 to pick up 28 points for the
Bears. Brown then got a pair of terrific showings in the 200
breast, as rookie Michael McVicker and Carlucci each turned in
impressive times to finish second and third respectively.
McVicker crossed the line in 2:05.76, just edging Carlucci's
2:06.15, as both swimmers finished well ahead of the pack.
The Bears then wrapped up the meet with a fifth in the 400 free
relay, finishing in 3:08.12.
