
Bears Fall To Friars, 78-62, In Battle of Providence

Providence, RI – Providence College used a strong second
half surge to pull away from a close game at the half and earn a
78-62 win over Brown in a battle of cross-town rivals at the Dunkin
Donuts Center. The loss drops Brown to 4-7 overall, while the
Friars go to 6-3 on the season.
Freshman Andrew McCarthy led four Brown players in double figures
with 14 points, while he grabbed a game high 9 rebounds for the
Bears. Jamine Peterson netted 22 points and hauled in nine rebounds
to lead the Friars.
Despite Brown having much the better of play in the first half, the
Bears trailed, 37-33, at the half after leading by four points with
3:50 remaining on a trey by freshman Matt Sullivan. The
sharp-shooting Sullivan connected on 4 of 5 first half treys in
scoring 12 points.
The Bears opened the second half on a strong note and evened the
score, 39-39, on two free throws by Matt Mullery with 17:28
remaining in the game. Brown went in a shooting slump over the next
seven minutes and was out-scored by the Friars, 22-4, to fall
behind, 61-43, with 10:45 remaining.
The Friars opened their biggest lead, 73-51, on lay-up by Marshon
Brooks with 5:54 remaining in the game.
Providence had a decided advantage on the boards, grabbing 24
offensive rebounds, while out-rebounding the Bears by a 56-38
margin.
Matt Sullivan ended the game with his 12 points, equaling his
career high. Matt's brother, junior Peter Sullivan, also
tossed in 12 points for the Bears, and pulled down four rebounds.
Senior Matt Mullery added 11 points and four rebounds, while junior
Chris Taylor grabbed seven rebounds and scored five points.
In addition to Peterson's 22 points, Kyle Wright added 15
points for the Friars.
The Bears will take a 21-day break for final exams and the
Holiday's, returning to action on December 28 to face Kean at
the Pizzitola Sports Center.
