Providence, Rhode Island – After a 21-day break for final
exams and the Holiday's, Brown head coach Jesse Agel
wasn't sure what to expect from his team. He found out
quickly as the Bears awoke from their long hibernation to hold off
a pesky Kean squad, 74-63, at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
The win lifts Brown to 5-7 overall, while Kean drops to 3-6.
Senior Matt Mullery's double-double led the Bears, scoring a
game high 17 points on 6 of 7 shooting from the field, and grabbing
11 rebounds. Junior Adrian Williams also scored 17 points,
connecting on 5 of 7 field goals from behind the three-point
arc.
“We practiced well all week and expected to play well,”
said Agel. “After building a big lead we weren't able
to sustain our effort. As the game got tighter we went back to
basics and took control of the game. I'm happy to get a win
and to move on.”
Brown came out of its slumber and jumped out to an 18-4 lead to
open the game with Williams scoring six points in the spurt on two
three-point baskets.
The Bears led by as many as 17 points in the first half, 38-21,
again on a Williams' trey with 2:09 left in the half. The
Cougars out-scored the Bears 6-1 to end the half to trail, 39-27 at
intermission.
Kean went on a 14-3 romp to open the second half to pull to within
one point of the Bears, 42-41, on a lay-up by Jonathan Jones with
15:15 remaining,
The pesky Cougars hung around and trailed by three points, 61-58,
with 4:05 left on the clock. The Bears answered with lay-ups by
junior Peter Sullivan, Mullery with 3:16 remaining to once again
take control of the game.
Sullivan also scored in double figures for Brown with 14 points,
while freshman Matt Sullivan added 11 points and six rebounds.
Jones led the Cougers with a double-double, netting 15 points and
pulling down a game high 13 rebounds. Vinnie Darpino also tossed in
15 points for Kean.
The Bears will be back in action again on Wednesday, December 30,
in their final game of 2009, facing Sacred Heart in Fairfield,
Connecticut. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
