12/6/2009 12:00:00 AM | Women's Basketball
Led by Christina Johnson and Hannah Passafuime's 17 points
apiece, the Brown women's basketball team (3-6) earned a
thrilling 65-62 overtime victory over Morgan State University (3-4)
in the consolation game of the Brown BEAR Basketball Classic.
Passafuime was selected to the All-Tournament team, as was Morgan
State's leading scorer Corin Adams, who put in a game-high 20
points this afternoon.
Brown's Johnson and Passafuime combined for 18 points in the
first 20 minutes of play to lead the Bears to a 28-26 halftime
advantage over the visiting Lady Bears of Morgan State. Morgan
State's only lead of the half came in the first minute of
play after a Theresa Davis three pointer, but the Bears took
control of a lead that was never relinquished after a three by
junior Sarah Delk at the 18:09 mark.
A three pointer by Passafuime gave Bruno a 15-5 lead seven minutes
into the first half, but Morgan State's Corin Adams hit
back-to-back three pointers to bring her squad within six. Two free
throws by Adams then cut the team's deficit to just two,
28-26, as both teams headed into the locker room at the half.
Adams led Morgan State's offense with 12 points as the team
shot just 29 percent from the field. Brown was led by Johnson and
Passafuime's nine points apiece, but Morgan State held a
22-15 advantage in rebounds.
The second half was an exciting one, as the score was tied nine
times and there were six lead changes in the final 25 minutes of
play. Back-to-back buckets by Theresa Davis gave Morgan State its
second lead of the afternoon, 30-28, but the Bears answered back
with lay-ups from both Johnson and Bonds. Morgan State continued to
find holes in Brown's defense, and gained a four-point lead
with 10 minutes remaining in regulation with the help of both Davis
and Mahala Thomas.
Sarah Delk's free throws brought Bruno back within one
with 8:26 left, and freshman Caroline King brought down a big
rebound and passed it to Courtney Lee who went the length of the
floor for a layup to give the lead back to the Bears at 7:53.
Morgan State then went ahead two points at the 6:49 mark, but after
a Brown timeout Passafuime nailed a trey to give Brown a 47-46
edge. The game was once again tied at 50 with just under four
minutes remaining, but a bucket by Theresa Davis gave Morgan State
a two-point advantage with 2:36 left in the game.
With 1:15 left in the game, Corin Adams sank two free throws to
give MSU a 66-64 lead. Brown's shot attempt on the other end
was unsuccessful, giving Morgan State the ball back. Courtney Lee
picked up her fourth steal of the game and dished it to Christina Johnson who put in a layup to tie it back up with just 37 left on
the clock. Morgan State had the last shot attempt of the half but
missed, sending the game into overtime tied at 56-56.
Corin Adams sank two free throws to score the first two points of
overtime with at the 2:42 mark to go ahead 58-56, but rookie
Lindsay Nickel put in a jumper to tie the game. The Bears got the
ball back and Johnson drove to the hole and got fouled and knocked
in both free throws to give Brown the two-point lead. Once again,
Adams drew a foul driving to the bucket and drained both from the
charity stripe to tie the game back up at 60 with 1:20 left in
overtime.
A jumper off the glass by Courtney Lee with just under a minute put
Brown back on top once again, and Nickel netted a free throw to
extend Brown's lead to three with 24 seconds left in the
overtime period. Passafuime then hit two free throws to give Brown
a 65-60 lead with 11 seconds left, but Morgan State cut the deficit
to three after a three pointer by Tireion Turner to end the game in
Brown's favor, 65-62.
Hannah Passafuime and Christina Johnson paced the Bears'
offense with 17 points apiece, as senior point guard Courtney Lee
added eight points and had a season-high 10 rebounds and five
assists. Sarah Delk added nine points and brought down six
rebounds, as the team ended the game shooting 35 percent from the
field. Corin Adams lit up for 20 points for Morgan State as Theresa
Davis followed with a double-double on 17 points and 10 rebounds.
Morgan State shot 33 percent from the field and were 17-of-25 from
the free-throw line. The Bears went 20-of-26 from the line as Delk
led the team going six-of-six.
The Bears are back in action when it takes on in-state rival
University of Rhode Island at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 9 at the
