
Brown Falls to Rhode Island 60-49

Kingston, RI- The University of Rhode Island earned a 60-49
victory over the visiting Brown University Bears on Wednesday
evening at The Ryan Center. Rhode Island freshman Ashley Rivera led
the Rams with 24 points, while Brown junior Sarah Delk led the
Bears with 11 points. The win for the Rams improved its record to
4-5 on the year, as the Bears dropped to 3-7 on the season.
Rhody's Ashley Rivera came out hot and hit three treys to
lead the Rams to a 16-6 advantage over the Bears in the first eight
minutes play. The Rams were shooting 53 percent from the
field and went four-of-six from beyond the arc by the 9:20
mark to extend its lead to 21-10. The Bears shot just 28 percent
from the field in that span, and were led by Christina Johnson's six points.
The Bears chipped away at its deficit with buckets by Aileen Daniels and Caroline King to come within seven with five minutes
remaining in the half, but Rhode Island built the
lead back up to 13 by the end of the first stanza. Rhode
Island's Rivera led the offense with 13 points, as the squad
finished the first half shooting an outstanding 50 percent from the
field. Brown connected on 11 of 33 shots from the field and was
0-10 from beyond the arc. Johnson led the offense with eight points
on four-of-six shooting and brought down five rebounds.
Brown's defense buckled down in the second half and came out
ready to play. Junior forward Sarah Delk scored five of
Brown's next nine points to cut the team's deficit to
just five, 37-31, at the 15:54 mark to cause Rhode Island to call a
timeout. Hannah Passafuime later nailed a jumper from the free
throw line to come within four, but the Rams' Rivera put in a
jump shot and converted the free throw after a Brown foul to push
their lead back to seven.
Brown senior Natalie Bonds went four-of-four from the free throw
line and Sarah Delk went three-of-three to aid Brown's
comeback, but Rivera connected on her fourth trey of the game which
was followed by an Anisha Wilson breakaway lay-up to give Rhode
Island a 12 point lead with 9:47 remaining in the game. Delk and
Bonds combined for 15 of Brown's 22 second-half points, as
the Bears found themselves down by seven with five minutes left on
the clock.
Delk added another jumper to bring the score to 53-47, but Rhode
Island's Rivera came back down to tally a three to extend the
lead back up to nine with 2:02 on the clock. Bonds hit two free
throws at the 1:52 mark, but the Rams held Brown scoreless in the
final minute of the game as Rhody earned the 60-49 win.
Delk led the offense with 11 points, followed by Johnson with 10
points and a team-high eight rebounds. The Bears ended the game
shooting just 28 percent from the field but went 12-of-15 from the
charity stripe. Rhody was 47 percent from the field (25-52) and was
6-13 from three point range. Rivera added a game-high 24 points,
and Anisha Wilson chipped in with 11.
The Bears will pick up play on Dec. 28-29 when it takes on St.
Joseph's at the Hawk Classic and either South Carolina or
Boston University.
