
South Carolina Defeats Brown 73-46 in Hawk Classic

PA- The Brown University Bears (3-9) fell 73-46 to the Southeast
Conference's South Carolina on Tuesday afternoon during the
consolation game of the Hawk Classic hosted at St. Joseph's
University. Freshman Lindsay Nickel led Brown in scoring with 11
points, followed by Sarah Delk with 10. After solid performances in
games against St. Joseph's and South Carolina, Hannah Passafuime was selected to the Hawk Classic's All-Tournament
Team.
The Bears played a solid first half, but the Gamecocks went on a
17-2 run in the final five minutes to gain a 40-24 advantage. Sarah Delk led Brown with 10 points on four-of-eight shooting from the
field and Aileen Daniels chipped in with six in the first 20
minutes of play.
The Bears started out hot and went basket for basket with South
Carolina during a half where the score was tied twice and saw four
lead changes. Sarah Delk hit her first trey of the day at the 14:54
mark to tie the game 14-14, and the Bears gained an 18-17 lead with
9:08 left after a jumper by Aileen Daniels.
After back-to-back baskets by Daniels and a jump shot by Lindsay Nickel gave Brown a three-point deficit, 25-22, with four minutes
remaining in the half, but the Gamecocks went on a 17-2 run to
extend its lead to 40-24 heading into halftime.
South Carolina's offense was led by Valerie Nainima's
and Charenee Stephens' nine points apiece, while forward
Kelsey Bone grabbed seven boards. South Carolina led 29-18 in
rebounds and was four-of-12 from beyond the arc.
South Carolina extended its lead to 47-24 after it came out and
scored the first seven points of the second half. The Gamecocks
continued to spread the ball around and went on to outscore Bruno
20-4 to gain a 60-28 advantage with 11:16 remaining in the game.
Brown's Nickel scored the team's first four points.
Nickel hit a three pointer and Natalie Bonds put in a jumper in
the paint, but the hot-shooting Gamecocks continued to score as
they pushed the score to 68-37 with 6:01 left in the game. Nickel
added seven points in the second half and Hannah Passafuime netted
six, but South Carolina earned a 73-46 win.
Lindsay Nickel led Brown's offense with 11 points and Sarah Delk added 10 points. Sophomore Hannah Passafuime netted eight
points and grabbed a team-high six rebounds, while also handing out
three assists. South Carolina was led by Valeria Nainima's 17
points on four-of-nine shooting from beyond the arc, while Charenee
Stephens put in 15 points and grabbed eight boards. Forward Kelsey
Bone pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds while also adding seven
points.
South Carolina out-rebounded the Bears 53-33, as the Gamecocks
finished shooting 42 percent from the field. Brown was just
23-percent from the field in the second stanza and finished
30-percent for the game.
The Bears will now host Albany at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 6
at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
