Polenska Scores Third of Season, But Bears Fall 5-1 to Harvard

The Bears got an exciting goal from rookie Alena Polenska (Kutna
Hora, Czech Republic) to tie the game early on Saturday afternoon
at Meehan, but couldn't hold on, as Harvard came away with a
5-1 victory. With the loss, Brown falls to 1-6-3 in the early
going, including an 0-5-3 mark in ECAC Hockey, while the Crimson
improve to 5-3-1 overall, and 5-3-0 against league opponents.
Bruno came out looking strong in the first period, consistently
getting pressure on the Harvard net, and outshooting the Crimson by
a 16-10 margin over the first 20 minutes. However, Harvard got on
the board first, scoring on its first shot of the game just over
three minutes into the action. Brown had a good chance to tie later
in the frame, getting a 5-on-3 opportunity, but Harvard's
penalty kill was in top form, shutting the Bears out heading into
the locker rooms.
In the second, Brown tallied its first goal midway though the
period to tie the action, as Polenska picked up her third of the
season just under seven minutes in. After junior Erica Kromm
(Naramata, B.C.) stole the puck from the Crimson, she fired it in
to Polenska, who showed a nice finishing touch by finding the back
of net for a 1-1 tie. However, Bruno was forced to play on the
defensive for much of the frame, as six penalties were called on
the Bears in the middle 20 minutes, and Harvard capitalized for two
power play goals, pushing the advantage to 3-1 at the second
intermission.
The Crimson struck again in the third period, picking up another
power play goal just 48 seconds into the frame, giving them a 4-1
lead, and added another with just 50 seconds later, taking a 5-1
advantage which would hold up through the final buzzer. Freshman
Katie Jamieson (Waterloo, ON) recorded another strong game, with 33
saves, but couldn't entirely shut down the Crimson.
The Bears will be back in action on Friday, when they host St.
Cloud State at Meehan Auditorium at 1:00 p.m.
