The men's swim team kicked off the 2009-10 season over the
weekend with a three-team meet at UConn, losing 175-124 to the host
Huskies and knocking off Laval by an impressive 172-115
margin. The Bears saw a number of impressive individual
performances though, including a first place finish in the 1000
freestyle by junior Ryan Kikuchi. Kikuchi was also part of
the second place 200 medley relay, which finished just three
seconds off of last season's best time.
The 200 medley led off the morning, swimming to a second place
finish in 1:34.9, just two seconds behind UConn, which won the
event with a time of 1:32.9. After Laval crossed the line in
third, Brown's “B” squad notched a fourth,
showing off Bruno's depth by beating the Husky second
team. Kikuchi then followed that performance with an
individual win, crossing the line with a relatively easy first in
the 1000 free, finishing with a time of 9:46.7, almost three
seconds ahead of second.
After a UConn win in the 200 free, Brown bounced back with a
second place finish in the 100 breast, as sophomore Timothy Juhn
finished just half a second off the lead. Brown followed with
one of its better events on the day, taking second, third, and
fourth in the 200 breast. Junior Conor Carlucci led the pack
of Bears, followed by Mike McVicker and Ray Grant.
Kikuchi then turned in another medal stand performance with a
third in the 200 back, and wrapped up the day by winning the 200
IM, edging the second swimmer in by a scant .86 seconds in one of
the most exciting races of the day.
On the diving boards, the Bears were led by sophomore C.J. Kambe
in the one meter event, as he finished second with a solid score of
286.04.
The Bears will be back in action next weekend, when they travel to
Dartmouth to compete against the Big Green and the Navy Midshipmen
at 11:00 a.m.
