11/15/2009 12:00:00 AM | Men's Soccer
Providence, RI- In its final game of the 2009 regular season,
the Brown men's soccer team (10-2-5, 5-2-0) dominated
Dartmouth College 3-0 in front of a huge crowd at Stevenson Field
this afternoon. The 3-0 loss Dartmouth suffered today was its
largest margin of defeat this season, as Brown locked up a
second-place finish in Ivy League standings with its win. Four
Brown seniors were honored prior to kick-off; Nick Elenz-Martin
(Encinitas, CA), T.J. Thompson (Atkinson, NH), Jarrod Schlenker
(Cranford, NJ) and Thomas Thunell (Columbia, SC).
The Bears came out with intensity and dominated the game from the
very start. Brown fired off five shots in the first 10 minutes of
play before Dartmouth even had a glimpse of Brown's goal. It
was at the 15:21 mark when Brown got on the scoreboard first for a
1-0 advantage. Elenz-Martin crossed the ball from the right side of
the field to freshman Thomas McNamara (West Nyack, NJ), who then
drove the ball past Big Green goalkeeper Sean Donovan to the low
right corner of the net.
Dartmouth finally took its first shot of the game at the 19:25
mark, but junior goalkeeper Paul Grandstrand (Orono, MN) made his
first of two saves to keep the Big Green scoreless. Just eight
minutes later at 27:21, sophomore Taylor Gorman (Freeport, ME) ran
up the left side of the field and received a cross from Jon Okafor
(Verona, NJ) in the box and drilled it to the low right corner to
increase Bruno's lead to 2-0.
The Big Green had a few more looks on goal, but Brown's
defense wouldn't crack as the Bears went into halftime with a
2-0 lead. The Bears outshot Dartmouth 8-6 in the first 45 minutes,
and also held a 1-0 advantage in corner kicks.
The Bears didn't let up in the second half and continued its
tenacious play on both ends of the field. Both teams fired off some
shots on goal, but neither could find the back of the net. After a
Dartmouth ejection for misconduct at the 69:03 mark, Brown
sophomore Austin Mandel (Tarzana, CA) headed one past Donavan to
secure the team's third goal of the game. Assists were
credited to both Elenz-Martin and sophomore Jay Hayward (Acton,
MA)
The Bears will now wait to see if their season will go on as the
2009 NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championship selections
will be announced live on ESPNews, Monday, Nov. 16, between 5:30
and 6:00 p.m. Eastern time.
