
Providence College Defeats Brown 83-50 in Women's Basketball Season Opener

Providence, RI- Led by Mi-Khida Hankins' game-high 17
points, Providence College (1-0) earned an 83-50 victory over host
Brown University (0-1) during its 2009-10 season opener in the
Pizzitola Sports Center this evening.
The Bears got off to a great start and showed no signs of nerves
before its first game of the new season, as the squad went basket
for basket with the Friars. Sophomore Hannah Passafuime (Soquel,
CA) nailed a three pointer, senior Natalie Bonds (Taveres, FL) put
in a jumper and senior Christina Johnson (Oakland, CA) followed
with two free throws by senior Christina Johnson (Oakland, CA) to
give Brown a 7-4 edge just a few minutes into the game.
Unfortunately, it was Brown's last lead of the night, as
PC's Brittany Dorsey swiped three steals and Symone Roberts
picked up two as the Friars forced Brown into 10 first-half
turnovers that the Friars converted into 14 points.
Providence continued to build on its lead, gaining as much as a
17-point advantage with 2:40 left in the stanza. Led by
Dorsey's 11 points and Chelsea Marandola's nine, the
Friars went into halftime with a 43-27 advantage over the Bears. PC
connected on 16-33 shots from the field (48.5 percent), as Brown
shot 33 percent on 8-24 shooting.
Passafuime was perfect from the arc connecting on all three
attempts as she led Brown with nine points, and rookie Lindsay Nickel (Los Altos, CA) went 3-8 from the field to chip in with
eight.
The Friars kept their lead in the second half, building a 61-38
advantage at the 11:44 mark. Freshman Sheila Dixon (Schenectady,
NY) and Courtney Lee (Archer, FL) both added a few jumpers for the
Bears, and Johnson came up with some big rebounds, but Providence
held Brown scoreless for nearly five minutes to take an 83-43 lead
at the final media timeout of the game.
Bonds, Johnson, Daniels and freshman Caroline King (Valencia, PA)
each scored in the final few minutes of the contest as the game
ended in PC's favor, 83-50.
Providence featured four players in double-digit scoring, with
Hankins leading the offense with 17 points. Roberts was next in
scoring with 16 points, followed by Dorsey with 14 and Marandola
with 11. Leading Brown was Johnson with 10 points and a team-high
seven rebounds, followed by Nickel with eight points and three
boards in her collegiate debut.
The Friars out-rebounded the Bears 41-35 and also forced the team
into 19 turnovers. Brown shot 32 percent from the field for the
game, and was 33.3 percent from the trey. The Friars shot 48
percent from the field and shot 40 percent from the three.
Brown is back in action when it hosts American at 4:00 p.m. on
Wednesday, Nov. 18, and also Central Connecticut State University
at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 21.
