
Brown Water Polo Drops Opener of Santa Clara Bronco Invitational

Santa Clara, CA- The Brown men's water polo team was
defeated 11-8 by No. 20 Cal Baptist on Friday evening during the
Santa Clara Bronco Invitational.
Cal Baptist gained a 3-2 lead after the first eight minutes of
play, and increased its advantage to 5-4 at halftime. The Lancers
then outscored Bruno 3-1 in the third quarter to eventually gain
the 11-8 win. The Bears were able to cut their deficit to two on
two different occasions during the match, but Cal Baptist was able
to capitalize on 15 Brown turnovers.
Rookie Svetozar Stefanovic tallied a team-high four goals, one
assist, two steals and two ejections drawn, while junior Gordon Hood (Carlsbad, CA) recorded two goals. Also adding to
Brown's offense was freshman Dean Serure (Coral Gables, FL)
and freshman Michael Hartwick (Los Angeles, CA) with one
apiece.
“We were sluggish on offense and Cal Baptist basically swam
us up and down the pool,” said Head Coach Felix Mercado.
“We came out here to learn and get better from each opponent,
and I hope we did. We have four more tough games this
weekend.”
Senior captain Kent Holland (Orinda, CA) played all four quarters
in goal and tallied six saves against the Lancers. The Bears will
now challenge Fresno Pacific and Air Force this afternoon.
