Santa Clara, CA- The Brown men's water polo team defeated
Fresno Pacific 12-2, but dropped a 9-8 overtime decision to No. 15
Air Force on Saturday in day two of the Santa Clara
Invitational.
Against Fresno Pacific, the Bears dominated from the start, taking
a 4-0 lead after the first eight minutes. Brown went on to
out-score Fresno 6-0 to head into the final period with a 10-0
lead, but the Sunbirds were able to match the Bears in scoring in
the final quarter with two goals, but the deficit was just too much
as the Bears claimed the 12-2 win.
Junior Gordon Hood (Carlsbad, CA) exploded for six goals and added
two assists to lead Brown to the win, and Corey Schwartz added two
goals and three steals. Freshman Svetozar Stefanovic notched three
goals, handed out two assists and tallied four steals, while senior
Kent Holland (Orinda, CA) led the defense with nine saves in
goal.
The Bears got behind early, 3-1, after the first quarter against
No. 15 Air Force, but Brown came back to tie the game to head into
halftime even at 3-3.
Both teams scored three goals in the second half to finish
regulation tied at seven to force overtime. Brown missed numerous
opportunities to score only to see Air Force add one goal in the
first overtime period. Stefanovic came up big for Bruno with a goal
to tie the game at eight in the second overtime. Unfortunately, Air
Force went on to draw an ejection and scored on a power play with
18 seconds remaining on the clock to earn the win.
Schwartz led the offense with four goals, as Stefanovic added
three and Michael Hartwick put in one. Holland had nine saves in
net.
“Overall I felt we did some great things today,” said
Head Coach Felix Mercado. “We were close to having a perfect
day, but it wasn't meant to be. I hope we take the positive
things we learned about our team today and keep moving forward with
good games tomorrow.”
