William P. Frost ’74
Sport: Soccer
Year Inducted: 2001
Bill Frost was considered one of the best players on some of the best soccer teams in Brown history. From 1971-1973, Frost played in three NCAA Tournaments with the Bears.
In 1973, Frost was an integral part of a team that went 12-4-1 and won an Ivy League title on its way to advancing to the NCAA Final Four in Miami, FL. His overtime goal against Hartwick in the NCAA Eastern Regional Championship propelled the “Bruins” into the NCAA National Semifinals. He scored a team-high nine goals as a senior tri-captain in 1973, and finished his brilliant career by being drafted in the season-ending professional draft by the Rhode Island Oceaneers.
Frost is the sixth leading Brown scorer of all-time with 73 points on 32 goals and nine assists. His 32 goals also ranks as the fifth highest mark in Brown men’s soccer history. Frost was awarded the Class of 1937 Trophy in 1973 as the player who contributed the most to the team.
According to legendary Brown soccer coach Cliff Stevenson, “If I were choosing sides, I’d pick Bill Frost first from all my players.”
Frost’s 1971 and 1972 teams both advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament before losing to Harvard. In the 1973 tournament, the Bears defeated UConn, Yale and Hartwick to become only the second Brown soccer team to ever reach the Final Four. At the National Semifinals, the Bears’ run for an NCAA title was stopped by St. Louis, who defeated Brown 3-1.
Frost was a second round selection of the Miami Toros of the NASL and first round selection of the newly formed Rhode Island Oceaneers of the ASL. He was recruited to try out for the USA Olympic Team. Frost chose to stay in Rhode Island and play professionally in 1974 and 1975 for the Oceaneers, including a championship in their debut season. He logged 2-goal games on three occasions.
