Peter Quaweay, a former secondary coach at Rhode Island and Duquesne as a well as a high school coach in Rhode Island and Maryland, spent one season on the Bears' coaching staff in 2021 as an assistant coach working with the team’s cornerbacks.
Â
Quaweay – who will recruit the areas of Maryland, Washington, D.C., Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina for the Bears – served as a head coach at the high school level in Maryland and Rhode Island from 2007-21, sending multiple defensive backs to play Division I college football. Prior to that, Quaweay acted as an assistant coach at the Division I level working with the secondaries at both URI (2004-07) and Duquesne (2003-04).
Â
From 2014-21, Quaweay served as the head football coach at Mount Pleasant High School in Providence – helping three defensive backs earn Division I offers – as well as a social studies teacher at Central High School.
Â
From 2007-14, he acted as a head football coach and history teacher in the Prince George’s County public school system, helping seven defensive backs gain Division I offers. That group included Tayvon Young – who went to Temple and has played for the Baltimore Ravens since 2016 – as well as Ronald Darby – who went to Florida State and has played in the NFL since 2015 for the Buffalo Bills, Philadelphia Eagles, Washington Football Team, and Denver Broncos. Quaweay also mentored Sherrod Baltimore, who overcame a difficult childhood to play collegiately at Maine and professionally for the CFL’s Ottawa Redblacks.
Â
At the collegiate level, Quaweay coached the secondary at URI from 2004-07. With the Rams, he helped the 2006 team post the league’s No. 1 pass defense and earn two all-league players. At Duquesne from 2003-04, he also coached the secondary with the group posting the league’s top passing defense and tallying three all-league players. Prior to Duquesne, Quaweay coached the secondary at Dean College from 2001-03.
Â
Quaweay is a 2006 graduate of the NCAA Future Head Coaches Academy and was a defensive back intern with the Arizona Cardinals in 2010 as part of the NFL’s Bill Walsh Minority Internship Program.
