Former Brown All-Ivy defensive lineman Clayton McGrath ’11.5 has been named the Bears’ Defensive Line Coach, returning to alma mater after successful coaching stints at Central Florida, Duke, South Florida and Wesleyan. He was a graduate assistant defensive line coach for Central Florida’s undefeated 2017 team.
A history concentrator at Brown, McGrath helped the Bears to four straight winning seasons and the Ivy League Championship in 2008, and was a two-time All-Ivy League selection in 2010 and 2011. As a junior, he led the conference in tackles for loss while ranking third in quarterback sacks.
As a graduate assistant Defensive Line coach at Central Florida, McGrath helped the 2017 Knights squad to its winningest season in school history and a berth in the Peach Bowl. He was also a graduate assistant Defensive Line coach at South Florida in 2016 when the Bulls posted their winningest season in school history.
McGrath, who earned a Master of Arts degree from Duke in 2016, was a graduate assistant at Duke for three seasons, joining the Blue Devils staff in July of 2013 on the defensive side of the ball. His 2015 campaign was his first coaching the defensive tackles.
During the 2014 season, McGrath was part of a defensive coaching group that watched Duke hold five opponents to 13 or fewer points, the most since 1971. The Blue Devils allowed 21.77 points a game, the fifth best mark since the start of the 1976 season and best since allowing 20.58 points per game in 1994. Duke also forced 21 turnovers with 10 fumbles recovered and 11 interceptions.
In 2012, McGrath served as an assistant coach at Wesleyan University, working with the defensive line as the Cardinals posted the program’s first winning season in 10 years.
A native of Longmeadow, Mass., McGrath graduated from Brown in 2011. His dad, Neil McGrath, is Brown’s current linebackers coach, and his brother, Sam, who also played football at Brown, is a graduate assistant coach at Duke.
