PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown Bears women's rugby program is proud to announce two nominees for the 2024-2025 MA Sorensen Award. First-Team All-NIRA selections Akilah Cathey and Nikki Lynch were selected as nominees.
The MA Sorensen Award is given annually to the top women's collegiate rugby player in the United States. This is the 10th year of the award and there are 16 nominees in all. The award is named after MarAnn (MA) Sorensen, who played in three Rugby World Cups, winning in 1991.
Cathey was Brown's first ever finalist last year, and Lynch was selected as a nominee a year ago. Both players were crucial to the Bears semi-final run in the fall, scoring a combined 23 tries. Cathey led the team in scoring with 60 total points, and Lynch was third on the team with 55.
Voting is open to the public until April 7. The list of finalists will then be voted on by the selection committee.
