PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown volleyball head coach Taylor Virtue has announced the hiring of Nicole Shields as an assistant coach. Shields joins Brown having spent the last four years working with Revolution Volleyball in Phoenix.
During her four years at Revolution Volleyball, Shields served as an assistant coach, a lead clinician and eventually a head coach. Shields led the team to gold medals in both 2021 and 2022 and a silver medal in 2024.
"I am thrilled to have Nicole joining our Brown Volleyball family," said Virtue. "She is coming to us with a wealth of knowledge in training multiple positions, a great understanding of the recruiting landscape and a hunger to compete and get better every day. I have no doubt that Nicole will excel here and make an immediate impact on the program."
Shields was on the volleyball staff at Grand Canyon University as an assistant coach for the 2023 season. While on staff, Shields helped Grand Canyon go 23-8 overall, 13-3 in the WAC and win the WAC Tournament to make the NCAA Tournament.
Shields started her career as a graduate assistant coach for three seasons at Arizona State University after playing for the Sun Devils for four seasons. At Arizona State, Shields was primarily a setter, leading the Sun Devils in assists in two of her four seasons and finishing second on the team in the other two. Shields was also named Pac-12 All-Academic honorable mention for the 2018 season.
Prior to ASU, Shields played volleyball and tennis in Portland, Oregon, at Jesuit High School. She earned numerous prep accolades, including 2015 Max Preps National Player of the Year, 2015 High School All-American and 2015 Oregon Gatorade Player of the Year. In 2014 and 2015, she was named the Oregon Player of the Year, Metro League Player of the Year and State Championship MVP. She led her team to state titles in 2012, 2014 and 2015.
