Archie Named Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown senior defensive back Elias Archie has been named the Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week following his standout performance in Friday night's 28-21 upset win over Rhode Island.
Archie had a hand in three of Brown's four takeaways in the Bears' first Governor's Cup victory since 2017.
On the opening drive of the game, Archie picked off a pass and returned it 13 yards to the 10-yard line, which set up a Brown touchdown two plays later for the early 7-0 lead less than two minutes into the game.
Early in the third quarter, Archie forced a URI fumble at the one-yard line, which rolled through the end zone for a touchback, taking what would have been a touchdown off the board and preserving Brown's seven-point lead at the time. The Bears then went back up the field and stuck the ball in the end zone to push their lead to 28-14.
Early in the fourth quarter, Archie jumped on top of a fumble near midfield for another key takeaway that killed a Rhody drive.
In total, he finished the night with 4.0 tackles, one fumble recovery, one forced fumble and one interception.
The victory was Brown's first win over a ranked opponent since 2009 when it defeated No. 19/20 Holy Cross in 2009, and the first win over a top 10 opponent since 1981, when it defeated No. 10 URI in the first-ever Governor's Cup battle.
Archie was previously named the New England Football Writers Gold Helmet winner on Sunday. This marks the second time in the first three weeks of the season that a Brown player has won Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week, as Tommy Dunn previously earned the honor on September 22 after the Bears' season-opening win over Georgetown.
The Bears will return to action this Friday evening with another in-state showdown against Bryant. Kickoff in Smithfield is set for 7 p.m.
