BROOKVILLE, N.Y. - The Brown women's rugby team (1-4) defeated the LIU Sharks (2-4) 55-14 on the second-to-last road trip of the fall season.
Kayla Atoigue made the first try for the Bears. The Sharks, however, quickly answered, scoring a try and a conversion of their own.
Building on their momentum, the Bears went on to score 40 unanswered points, ending the first half and opening the second with dominance. While Atoigue, Laryssa Barbosa, Olivia Baptiste, and Lauren Huang each scored two tries to put the Bears on top, Charlotte Davies and Julia Murray contributed four successful conversion kicks. The victory was capped by Huang and Priscilla Maalouf, who added two additional tries to end the game.
"Today really exemplified what the team is capable of, and the coaching staff was so happy with the execution on the day from the team," said Kathleen Flores' Head Coach Rosalind Chou. "They showed huge improvement with their defense and finally started to click on attack. It was a really great day all around for the Bears.
"Some standouts on the day were sophomore Priscilla Maalouf, who took charge of the lineups and was a real threat on the edges on attack, and the senior center pair gave us so much go forward with Laryssa Barbosa and Olivia Baptiste. Our freshmen were able to get several breaks or assists on the edges — Naomi VanZandt, Lauren Huang, Charlotte Davies, and Abby Cirillo.
"It was a full team effort with some great tactical decisions and kicking from Julia Murray and Lily McGettigan."
Looking ahead, the Bears return to Providence on Saturday, Oct. 18th, to celebrate the seniors.
