Volleyball Drops Four-Set Match at Cornell

ITHACA, N.Y. – Brown volleyball (7-6, 2-2 Ivy) dropped a four-set match at Cornell (9-5, 4-0 Ivy) on Friday (Oct. 10), 25-17, 25-22, 16-25, 25-22.
Mariia Sidorova led Brown on offense with 12 kills and Sophia Wolfson finished the night with 11 kills, hitting .400. Hannah Flannery added nine kills for the Bears. Julia Kakkis posted 34 assists on the night.
Jessie Golden led the Bears defense with 21 digs and Flannery had a career-high 14 digs. Kakkis was third on the team with eight digs. Brown finished the match with nine blocks, led by four each from Wolfson and Ally Panzloff.
The Bears finished with nine service aces, their third-straight match with at least eight aces. Golden, Flannery and Elle Weaver each had two aces.
A 6-0 run in the middle of the set turned the first frame from being tied at 10 to a 16-10 lead for Cornell. A 3-0 run later in the set put Brown down 10 and the Bears were never able to get closer than six the rest of the way.
Brown trailed set two by six at 16-10 but the Bears climbed back into the set, eventually pulling within one a 23-22 after a kill by Sidorova and an error by Cornell. The Big Red responded, winning the next two points to go up 2-0.
Tied at seven in the third set, Brown used an 8-1 run, featuring two kills by Panzloff, to take a 15-8 lead. The Bears led 21-16 after two points by Cornell before two service aces by Flannery gave Brown set point. A block by Wolfson and Panzloff forced a fourth set.
The Bears used a 3-1 run in set four to go up 15-13 but Cornell took control of the set with a 9-2 run to take a 22-17 lead. The Big Red earned match point but the Bears fought off three-straight points to make it 24-22 before a block from Cornell ended the match.

Brown will stay in New York for a matchup at Columbia on Saturday (Oct. 11) beginning at 6 p.m.

- With her 21 digs, Jessie Golden now has 25-career matches with at least 20 digs. Golden now has the most 20-dig matches for the Bears since 2012, passing Melissa Cairo (2014-17), who had 24.
- Sophia Wolfson has reached double-figures in kills in 10 matches this season and in six-straight matches. The sophomore has also hit at least .400 in her last three matches and five of her last six matches.
- The loss at Cornell was the first time Brown has lost in Ithaca since a four-set loss in 2019.
