
Volleyball Drops Season Opener in Five Sets Against Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown volleyball lost its season opener in five sets to Providence College on Friday (Sept. 6). Ally Panzloff led Brown's offense with career-best 16 kills.
Masha Sidorova was second on the team with 13 kills and Hannah Flannery finished the match with nine. Ella Park tallied 44 assists and had a team-high 17 digs for a double-double.
Jessie Golden posted 14 digs on the night with Eve McLaury and Victoria Vo each collecting eight. As a team, Brown had seven blocks, led by four from Beau Vanderlaan and three from Sidorova.
The Bears used an early 4-0 run that featured two kills by Panzloff to jump ahead 8-3. Another 4-0 run later in the set that included a block by the duo of Vanderlaan and Sidorova, plus an ace from Fisayo Afonja made the score 20-8. Kills by Sidorova and Afonja helped Brown close out the first set 25-17.
Panzloff added two more kills and after another service ace, this one by Golden, Brown took a 10-6 lead in the second set. Panzloff collected another kill and teamed with Afonja for a block to push the Brown lead to five. With Brown up 21-15, Panzloff continued her tear in the second set with another kill and ended the set with another block teaming with Afonja.
A 5-1 run by Providence in the middle of the third set allowed the Friars to take control at 16-12 but Brown managed to tie the set at 18 following kills by Flannery and Sidorova. Two-straight points from Providence put the Friars in front for good as Providence won the third set 25-20.
Brown began the fourth set up 5-1 after a kill from Vanderlaan but Providence quickly erased the lead, eventually jumping ahead by as much as seven at 23-16. Brown erased the lead with a 7-0 run with multiple service aces from Vo. Tied at 23, Providence scored the next two points to force a fifth set.
In set five, Brown led 6-3 after two kills from Flannery. Providence tied the set at eight and the set went back and forth until Brown took a 13-12 lead. Providence responded scoring the next three points to win the match.
UP NEXT
Brown will finish up play in the Ocean State Cup with matches against Bryant (1 p.m.) and Rhode Island (4 p.m.) on Saturday.
