Brown Band Set to Celebrate Centennial Anniversary
9/17/2024 2:43:00 PM | Football, General
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown Division of Athletics and Recreation is proud to join in celebrating the Centennial of the Brown University Band during the Fall 2024 semester. The Brown Band has been entertaining audiences at halftime of football games, as well as other athletic and university events, since its founding in September 1924.
As a part of the centennial celebration, the Brown Band will welcome back alumni for the football home opener against Harvard on September 28, with a recognition of the anniversary as part of their halftime performance. Postgame festivities will include a celebratory banquet for band alumni and families.
"The Brown Band has always been an integral part of truly meaningful moments on our campus and of the Athletics experience at Brown," Mencoff Vice President for Athletics and Recreation Dr. M. Grace Calhoun '92 said. "We were proud to have them officially join our Divisional team last year, and we are thrilled to celebrate them and their special place at Brown as they mark their first 100 years and look forward to the next 100."
Since the 2023-24 academic year, the Brown Band has been an official club within the Division of Athletics and Recreation. The Band has continued its long-standing traditions of performing at Brown football games and University events, including Commencement and Convocation, while increasing their level of support for many other athletics teams throughout the year. The group has also focused on increased community engagement and performed at events around Providence, including school and hospital visits.
In addition, the Brown Band is now a part of the Brown University Sports Foundation's Athletics Annual Fund, which will help to further the student experience for band members. Gifts to the BUSF Athletics Annual Fund are also included in the Brown Annual Fund and, for Brown Band alumni, are recognized for reunion class giving. "The Brown Band is the musical spirit of the university," said Karen Mellor, Advisor, Brown University Band. "For 100 years they have cheered on Brown athletes and provided the musical soundtrack for university events such as Commencement and Convocation. Whether marching around campus early in the morning, running onto the football field for a half time show, performing an ice show at a hockey game, or playing under the world's largest conductor's baton, the band adds music and good cheer wherever it goes and serves as the embodiment of being 'Ever True to Brown'."
More details on the history of the band and its origins can be found here.
