#5 Women's Crew Sweeps First Day of B1G Invitational with 8 Wins

SARASOTA, Fla. – The fifth-ranked Brown Bears swept the first day of the Big 10 Invitational on Friday at Nathan Benderson Park, taking eight wins in eight races over several nationally-ranked programs.
"The conditions were excellent, the competition was excellent and we are all looking forward to the next round Saturday morning," said head coach John Murphy. "Sarasota is an exceptional place to race and we very much appreciate the opportunity to make this trip."
The B4 got the racing started in the morning session, taking the victory with a time of 7:14.014. On clear and calm waters, the Bears erased an early Duke lead and eventually separated from the field with open water for the 3.4-second win.
The B4's time was the fastest of the session across all four morning heats.
The A4 shell jumped to an early lead and extended the lead throughout the 2,000 meters to post a time of 7:08.608 to finish nearly 10 seconds ahead of second-place Indiana (7:16.551).
The Second Varsity 8 picked up Bruno's third win of the morning session with a time of 6:25.743. The Bears held off the Buckeyes throughout the second half of the race to maintain the top position and cross the line first.
The Varsity 8 capped the morning session sweep with a time of 6:21.323 to take first. The Bears extended the lead to open water over Indiana with about 500 meters remaining and cruised across the finish line for a 5.3-second win.
The B4 grabbed its second win of the day with a 22-second win over second-place Rutgers to kick off the afternoon session. Annie Herring stroked the shell to a time of 7:29.534.
The 2V8 continued the strong afternoon by finishing nearly 10 seconds ahead of Rutgers for its second victory of the day. Molly Lundberg coxed the crew to a time of 6:34.464 to finish ahead of the Scarlet Knights (6:44.135) and Alabama (6:49.138).
The Varsity 8 rounded out the day with Bruno's eighth victory, posting a time of 6:29.464 to finish nearly five seconds ahead of Rutgers (6:34.304). Minnesota took third with a time of 6:42.604.
Brown wraps up the two-day Big 10 Invitational tomorrow morning at Nathan Benderson Park against Ohio State, Michigan, and SMU.
