PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown freshman running back Matt Childs has been named to the Watch List for the Stats Perform 2024 Jerry Rice Award, which recognizes the freshman player of the year in FCS Football. Childs is one of just 30 players nationwide named to the watch list.
Childs had stood out in the Bears' offense through his first five career games this season, currently ranking as the team's leading receiver and second-leading rusher. His 56.40 receiving yards per game rank eighth in the Ivy League, while his 33.20 rushing yards per contest rank 15th, with both marks leading all Ivy rookies.
He has twice been named the Ivy League Rookie of the Week, the first coming after tallying four catches for 101 yards and a touchdown against Harvard, and then adding 58 yards rushing and 93 yards receiving and two touchdowns against Bryant. His 89.6 all-purpose yards per game rank sixth in the Ivy League. He has rushed for at least 42 yards in each of his last three games and has topped the 50-yard receiving mark three times.
Brown now has a player who has been named to the watch lists for three national awards from Stats Perform this season, following Isaiah Reed (Buck Buchanan Award/national defensive player of the year) and Jake Willcox (Walter Payton Award/national offensive player of the year) having previously been named to preseason watch lists.
The Jerry Rice Award winner will be announced on December 4 and honored at the Stats Perform National Awards Banquet in Frisco, Texas on January 4.
Childs and the Bears will return home for two straight games, starting this Saturday, October 26 with a matchup against Cornell.
