Women's Rugby Takes Big Win Over Vassar in 15s Match

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown women's rugby cruised to a 71-0 home win over Vassar College in a 15s match at Richard Gouse Field at Brown Stadium on a sunny Saturday afternoon on College Hill.
"The squad put in a full 80 minutes of XVs and got valuable minutes for all of our newer athletes," said Kathleen Flores Head Women's Rugby Coach Rosalind Chou. "Five walk-ons from this school year got to play substantial blocks of time to get the much-needed experience for the Fall XVs season. It was a great way to send off our four seniors with their last home match in a Brown uniform.
"We are so grateful to Vassar for providing us the necessary minutes to continue to improve and build depth going into next year. Now we will focus solely on 7s as we prepare for the Ivy tournament at Dartmouth."
Brown jumped to an early lead with Mahdia Parker recorded the first try and Julia Murray hitting the conversion.
Akilah Cathey and Morgan Cunningham touched down for tries with Murray hitting the conversion on the latter to push Brown's lead to 19-0 just 11 minutes into the match.
Parker and Cathey both recorded their second tries of the game with Murray good on both conversions to extend Brown's lead to 33-0. Cathey added her third try of the game and Emerson Goodrich touched down for her first with Murray good on both conversions again to make it 47-0 Bears at the half.
Brown and Vassar played a second half of 15s rather than a pair of 7s matches.
Parker and Elizabeth Mahoney opened the second half with tries with Murray on both conversions to make it 61-0 Bears.
Senior Kate Molloy added her own try in the 56th minute and Goodrich added her second of the afternoon ten minutes later to push Brown's score to 71.
The Bears compete in the Ivy 7s on Saturday (Apr. 22) in Hanover, New Hampshire.
