HAMILTON, N.Y. – A bank shot at the buzzer rimmed just out as Colgate (1-0) was able to come away with a 72-70 victory over Brown (0-1) on Monday evening. The near-packed house at Wesley M. Cotterell Court was a back-and-forth affair with nine ties in a game that was ultimately decided on free throws.
Kino Lilly Jr. posted a game-high 21 points on five triples, Nana Owusu-Anane added 20 points, seven rebounds, three steals and three blocks and Kalu Anya finished 6-of-7 for 13 points and five boards.
"I was pleased with how our team continued to fight and compete against a very good team in their gym," said Mike Martin '04, Men's Basketball Head Coaching Chair. "Obviously, we are all disappointed with the result and came up just short, but we'll grow from this experience as we move forward."
FIRST HALF
Lilly Jr. went 4-of-8 from three-point range in the opening stanza to lead all first-half scorers with 12. Owusu-Anane added eight points and drained five from the charity stripe, along with providing a force on the defensive end with two blocks.
After 20 minutes, the game was tied at 31-all.
SECOND HALF
Highlighted by a 10-2 run into the under-16 media, the Bears regained a lead, 48-44. Kalu Anya's and-one stamped a 7-of-9 from the field start to the second.
An Owusu-Anane and-one with 8:55 remaining put Brown ahead by one, and minutes later, Aaron Cooley did the same, this time for a two-point cushion.
Lilly's driving layup with 5:02 to go gave the junior 21 points and Brown a one-point lead, the 15th career 20-point game for No. 10.
Down one with six seconds to go, Owusu-Anane drove to the basket and was fouled, knotting the game at 70 after connecting on the first of two from the line.
Colgate was fouled with two ticks and gave Brown a chance to win at the end after stepping out of bounds. Lilly Jr.'s corner fadeaway rimmed just out and the Raiders were able to escape the 2023-24 season opener with a 72-70 victory.
NOTES
Tonight was Felix Kloman's first career start… Lilly drained four triples in a half for the first time since January 2 of last season (vs. Penn)… Owusu-Anane scored 20 points for the third time as a Bear and the first time since pouring in 27 versus Columbia (Jan. 21, 2023).
