HOUSTON – Brown volleyball lost in three sets to Rice to begin its weekend at the Adidas Invitational on Friday night (Sept. 9). The Bears fell 25-19, 25-18, 25-12 in a battle against the Owls.
Beau Vanderlaan led Brown (2-3) on offense with 12 kills. It was the second-straight game Vanderlaan has reached double-digit kills and the third on the season. The sophomore hit .455 for her best hitting percentage of the year.
Jilienne Widener and Sophia Miller we second on the team collecting five kills apiece. Cierra Jenkins returned to the lineup and guided Brown's offense with 22 assists. The Bears offense struggled as a whole against the Rice defense, hitting just .140.
Rice (7-1), who is receiving votes in the latest AVCA Top-25 poll, was on fire on offense, hitting .407 as a team. Three Owls had double-digit kills with all three of those Owls hitting over .480.
Brown had an 8-4 lead in the first set after a service ace from Widener but Rice went on a 5-0 run to take a lead. Later in the set, a kill by Vanderlaan pulled the Bears back within two but it was the closest the Bears would get.
A kill by Widener midway through the second set made the score 13-10 in favor of Rice but a 4-1 run by the Owls put Brown in a six-point hole. The Bears got the set back to five a couple of times but could not get any closer as Rice took a 2-0 lead.
Miller tied the third set up at four with a kill but multiple runs by Rice put Brown in a six-point hole. Kate Sheire picked up a block to pull Brown within four, but a 6-1 run gave Rice control of the set they would not relinquish.
