Volleyball heads to Texas for weekend tournament

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown volleyball will be heading to Texas for the weekend to take part in the Adidas Invitational hosted by Rice University. The Bears will take on Rice on Friday (Sept. 9) before facing off against Texas Tech and Texas A&M Corpus Christi on Saturday (Sept. 10).
The matchup against Rice will start at 7 p.m. ET and will be streamed on CUSA TV. The games against Texas Tech (1 p.m. ET) and Texas A&M Corpus Christi (8 p.m. ET) will not be streamed.

SCOUTING THE BEARS
- Senior Sophia Miller is tops on the team and is second in the Ivy League with 4.00 kills per set in the early season. Miller currently ranks 58th in the NCAA in kills per set. The Dallas, Texas native already has two 20-kill matches through the first four games of the season, matching her total from a season ago.
- Miller is seventh in the Ivy League and leads the bears with a .321 hitting percentage. She has hit over .300 in three of the four matches this season, including a .400 performance against Siena. Miller has also finished with 10-plus digs in three of the four matches this season, posting double-doubles in each of the last two contests for the Bears.
- Jilienne Widener is second on Brown's roster with 2.59 kills per set and has collected at least nine kills in every match this season. Widener, a junior, posted a career-high 16 kills against Air Force and followed that up with a 10-kill outing against Siena.
- Both Kate Sheire and Beau Vanderlaan are averaging just over 2.00 kills per set. The duo have combined for four double-digit kill outings with Vanderlaan reaching the mark against Rhode Island (10) and Bryant (13) and Sheire accomplishing the feat against Air Force (11) and Siena (12).
- The offense has been guided by Kate Danaher who leads the team with 117 assists and is second on the team with 8.36 assists per set. Danaher took over primary setting duties against Air force and finished the match with a career-best 53 assists. In the following match against Siena, Danaher tallied her first-career double-double with 37 assists and 15 digs. The junior collected 27 assists in the five-set loss to Bryant.
- After coming on strong during Ivy League play last season, Gabby Derrick has picked up where she left off at the net. Derrick leads the Ivy League with 1.24 blocks per set, thanks in large part to a career-high 10 blocks against the Bulldogs. Derrick started the season with four blocks against Rhode Island and five against Air Force.
- Vanderlaan is second on the squad with 1.06 blocks per set, having collected 17 total blocks. Vanderlaan has had four blocks in three of the four matches this season with a season-high seven against Bryant.
- Brown's defense is holding its opponents to a league-low .129. The Bears are second in the league in blocks per set (2.35) and fourth in the league in digs per set (14.06). Victoria Vo is sixth in the Ivy League and leading the Bears with 3.59 digs per set. Vo has finished with double-digit digs, including a season-best 24 in the matchup against Air Force.
- Freshman Jessie Golden is third on the team with 39 digs and is averaging 2.29 digs per set. Golden is second on the team with six service aces this season.
- Rice is 5-1 on the season with four of their wins coming in straight-sets. The lone loss for Rice was a five-set defeat at No. 18 Oregon.
- The Owls are hitting .248 as a team and holding opponents to .138 hitting on the season.
- Danyle Courtley leads the team with 3.00 kills per set. Anota Adekunle is second on the team with 2.76 kills per set and is hitting .370.
- Nia McCardell leads the defense with 5.14 digs per set and has collected at least 12 digs in every match. The junior had had three games with 20+ digs and had 32 digs at Oregon.
- Texas Tech enters the weekend a perfect 6-0 with a pair of 3-1 wins at Notre Dame and at Georgia.
- Tech is hitting .316 as a team and allowing opponents to hit just .168. The Red Raiders are averaging three more kills per set than their opponents.
- Kenna Sauer is averaging 4.38 kills per set and hitting .296 on the season. Reagan Cooper is second on the team with 3.06 kills per set and a .354 hitting percentage.
- Karrington Jones leads a defense at the net with 1.24 blocks per set. The Red Raiders are averaging 2.43 blocks per set through the six games.
- Texas A&M Corpus Christi is 0-8 on the season and has dropped its last four matches in straight-sets.
- A&M-Corpus Christi is hitting just .180 on the year and is allowing opponents to hit .294 this season.
- Leah Stolfus leads the offense with 2.93 kills per set and is hitting a team-high .361.
- Carissa Barnes anchors the defense for the Islanders with 5.18 digs per set. Barnes has had double-digit digs in all but one match this season, including a 45-dig effort against Tulsa.
