Field Hockey Bounces Back with Shutout Win Over Sacred Heart
9/25/2022 3:47:00 PM | Field Hockey
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown Bears (6-2, 0-1 Ivy League) bounced back after consecutive overtime losses to claim a 4-0 home win over the Sacred Heart Pioneers (0-8, 0-0 NEC) Sunday afternoon at Goldberger Family Field.
Lexi Pellegrino led the Bears with two goals and five points, pushing her goal streak to six games and her point streak to eight games.
"The most important thing was that we stayed on task for the duration, no matter if it's overtime or regulation, sticking to our gameplan for the entire match is critical," said head coach Britt Broady. "We were able to do that today and I'm pleased with the results."
Brown and Sacred Heart went scoreless through the opening quarter and it was the Pioneers who had all three shots on goal in the frame with Brown goalkeeper Jodie Brine turning aside all three shots.
Pellegrino rifled her seventh goal of the season past Pioneer goalkeeper Samantha Maresca (9 saves) early in the second quarter. Brown's penalty corner offense struck again on the opening marker with Mikayla Walsh and Lindsey Ross picking up assists.
Just over eight minutes later, the Bears penalty corner offense struck again as Pellegrino found Ross with the extra pass for the captain's second goal of the season. Walsh also assisted on the play for her eighth assist of the season.
Late in the first half, Walsh stretched the field with a long pass to Imogen Govan down the right sideline. Govan collected the pass and tiptoed along the sideline before firing a pass back to Walsh in the circle, who moved the ball to Pellegrino at center-circle for the freshman's second goal of the game.
Lucy Adams added to the scoring with her third of the season early in the fourth quarter. The Andover, Massachusetts native re-started play and raced around a Pioneer and quickly beating Maresca with a short-side shot.
Notably, senior Meghan Gormley made her collegiate field hockey debut in the fourth quarter. The North Kingstown, Rhode Island native joined the team early in the season and enters her senior year with the Brown Softball program this spring.
It's huge," Broady added on Gormley's debut. "She's the epitome of selflessness and we really needed her when we had a bunch of injuries and she's helped us so much. She's really grown as a field hockey player and has really contributed since she's joined the team. It was nice to be able to put her in and she got a couple balls and made great plays on the ball, as I see her do in practice every day of the week."
On the defensive side of the field, Brown held the Pioneers to just a single shot attempt in the final three quarters. Sacred Heart went 43:05 of gameplay between shot attempts.
