Intensely dedicated and powerfully joyful about all things related to Brown University, Chancellor Emeritus Artemis A.W. Joukowsky Jr. and Professor Emerita Martha Sharp Joukowsky were the embodiment of what it means to be "ever true." Together, they inspired us to achieve excellence, to serve others, and to reach our full potential – both as individuals and as a community.
Â
Artemis Joukowsky – known affectionately as "Arte" – passed away on December 11, 2020. Martha Joukowsky passed away on January 7, 2022. Their love for Brown began as undergraduate students and spanned across decades and continents. Their incredible influence lives on through the many generations of Brunonians they mentored and inspired as they elevated Brown's reputation for excellence.
Â
This weekend, Brown University celebrates the Joukowskys' leadership, loyalty, and vast impact through nearly all aspects of University life -- from their fervent support of academic programs in archaeology and medicine, to beautifying the campus, and championing Brown athletics.
Â
A co-founder of the Brown University Sports Foundation and a staunch advocate of Brown's student-athletes, Arte for many decades was an instantly recognizable presence at sporting events – especially football games and practices where he could be found cheering on the Bears from the sidelines. It was this devotion that led Arte to author a comprehensive history of Brown football and, later, a history of Brown crew. His connections within the Brown community were numerous, and casual encounters with fellow Brunonians would often spur into deep conversation about Brown's rich history.
Â
Meanwhile, Martha's extraordinary career in archaeology led her to conduct fieldwork across the world in locations including Lebanon, Hong Kong, Sicily, Turkey and Jordan. As a professor, scholar and mentor, especially to female archaeologists, she instilled a passion for fieldwork and a deep respect for the countries in which they worked. In 2004, a gift from the couple established the Artemis A. W. and Martha Sharp Joukowsky Institute for Archaeology and the Ancient World, which has supported research in locations around the world.
Â
Brown will remain forever appreciative of the Joukowskys' remarkable contributions.
