HENLEY-ON-THAMES, ENGLAND – Brown's eight boat won its first two races at the 2022 Henley Royal Regatta to earn a berth to The Island Challenge Cup semifinals tomorrow against Oxford Brookes.
The Island Challenge Cup is the university eights division at the historic Regatta.
The eight boat advanced past Newcastle University in the opening Round of 16 race on Thursday. The Bears took a four-length win over Newcastle to move to the next round of The Island Challenge Cup.
The quad took on Leander Club 'A' in the opening round of the famed Regatta in The Princess Grace Challenge Cup. The race marked a rematch of the Henley Women's Regatta final. Unfortunately for the Bears, Leander took the victory in the opening race to advance.
The Eights drew A.S.R. Nereus from the Netherlands in Friday's semifinal. A.S.R. Nereus was founded in 1885 as the Amsterdam Student Rowing Club Nereus.
Brown dominated the strong Dutch boat in the Round of 8 to advance to the semifinals. From the start, Brown jumped to an early lead and only built upon that lead through the entire 2,112-meter course.
The eights hit the water tomorrow evening at 6:50 p.m. local time (1:50 p.m. Eastern) to take on Oxford Brookes 'A' in the semifinals. Oxford Brookes, considered one of the strongest teams in the U.K., took a one and one quarter length victory over NCAA rival Cal in the quarterfinal.
In the opposite semifinal, the University of London takes on another NCAA and Ivy League program in Yale.
