Women's Crew Readies for 2022 Henley Royal Regatta

HENLEY-ON-THAMES, ENGLAND – Over the last week and a half in England, the Brown women's crew team has prepared for the 2022 Henley Royal Regatta.
The famed Regatta has been held annually since 1839 with lone exceptions to the two World Wars and the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Bruno eight boat qualified for the Henley Royal Regatta with their first-place finish at the Henley Women's Regatta earlier in June.
The 4- and 4x- crews both had to advance through time trials. The 4x- boat finished inside the top-six of the time trials to qualify for the historic Regatta. The 4- crew clocked the third-fastest time of the trials, but only the top-two boats advanced to the Henley Royal Regatta.
The duo of Ashley Giannetti and Annie Herring competed in the 'Spare Pair' race and picked up a win over St. Catherine's Rowing Club, based out of Ontario, Canada, and a win over a composite crew to kick off the Henley Royal Regatta.
The eight and quad boats return to the water on Thursday (June 30).

Sophomore Molly Lundberg provides her second update on the team's activities between the end of the Henley Women's Regatta and start of the Henley Royal Regatta.
The Women's Henley Regatta was a great success for the team. The straight four and the quad both made it to the finals and just missed a first-place finish. The eight won the championship 8+ title and brought home the Ron Needs Cup, earning them an automatic qualification for the Henley Royal Regatta. Unlike the eight, the quad and straight four set out on Friday afternoon to race a time trial event to earn their spots at the Henley Royal regatta.
A time trial is where boats are sent out at 30-second intervals and race down the course for a time. These times are ranked, and the top boats progress to side-by-side racings, whereas the bottom few boats are eliminated. The quad was among the top six boats and received a spot to compete at HRR. The straight four put down a gutsy race with the third overall fastest time. Unfortunately, the straight four just missed the qualifying position for HRR, as only the top two boats in this time trial progress to side-by-side racing. While the straight four's opportunity for racing was cut short, they will be able to continue to support the team alongside Brown Crew supporters in the Stewards Enclosure.
Following the tough day of racing, current athletes, alumni, parents, administrators, coaches, and friends gathered in an upstairs dining room in the beautiful Leander Club to celebrate the rare opportunity to race at Henley Royal Regatta. This evening would not have been possible without Julia Petropoulod Coupland, Marcia Hooper, and Kqantu Pareja Bent, who took the time to plan, organize, and sponsor this unforgettable evening. Julia and Marcia are both Brown Women's Crew alumnae; Marcia was previously a coxswain and Julia a rower. Marcia spoke to us about the importance of Title IX in Women's Sport in honor of Title IX's 50th anniversary.
A bit later, M. Grace Calhoun '92, PhD., our lovely Vice President for Athletics and Recreation, shared a few words and many thanks to our alumni supporters and friends who made this evening possible. After these speeches, the room filled with voices and laughs as we chatted amongst each other, parents, and alumni.
On Saturday, the following morning, the team faced the next phase of training in preparation for the Royal Regatta. The rowers worked to sharpen their edge and continue to build on their foundation of fitness. Over the course of the weekend, we had four practice sessions followed by lots of rest and recovery.
On Monday afternoon, our two alternate athletes, Ashley Giannetti and Annie Herring, launched for their "Spare Pair" race sponsored by Jesus College Boat Club. The pair raced their first race against St. Catherine's, a Canadian team, and won by open water. They progressed to finals and raced against a composite crew including one athlete from Mercantile and one athlete from Melbourne Girls Grammar School. The Brown Pair finished with a generous lead and brought home the trophy. This was an excellent way to kick off Henley Royal Regatta. For the other crews, the practice load began to lighten on Monday morning to ensure that the athletes are properly rested and ready for the big week of racing ahead.
Similar to Henley Women's Regatta, Henley Royal Regatta follows a bracket system where each crew lines up for side-by-side racing and is given one shot to progress forward. The Quad and the Eight will line up for their first races on Thursday (June 30). The Quad will be competing against Leander Club – a rematch of the Women's Henley final – and the Eight will be racing Newcastle University. We hope for tons of speed and success this weekend– Go Bruno!
