Â
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown University Athletics and Recreation unveiled Tuesday its new logo and brand identity, ushering in a new era for the Division.
Â
Â
The primary mark is the stylized "B". We honor our history with a modern stylized "B", similar to the "B" seen on our letter sweaters, and embrace the progressive and new vision for the Division. The "B" was worn as far back as the 1890s and contained the primary colors of the university. The "B" is integral to Brown University's history, one that featured a 1916 Rose Bowl appearance by the Bears and NFL Hall of Famer Fritz Pollard.
Â
The stylized "B" provides a simple and fortified design in the University's primary colors – brown and red.
Â
The new design is accompanied by a comprehensive and unified Brown athletics visual brand identity, including a custom Brown Bears font and "Indomitable".
Â
Our secondary mark is the "B" with the standing bear or "Indomitable". Inspired by the statues seen on our historic campus - Indomitable on Ittleson Quad, Bronze Bruno on College Green, and the bear in Meehan Auditorium, it includes a fierce, aggressive face and powerful stance to inspire competitiveness across all athletic programs.
Â
"Our fierce marks include historically symbolic ties to the B seen on the letter sweaters and Indomitable and areas of importance in our Division of Athletics and Recreation," said M. Grace Calhoun '92, Ph.D., Chancellor Samuel M. Mencoff '78 Vice President for Athletics and Recreation. "Our new brand makes a statement about who we are and signals a new day for the Division of Athletics and Recreation."
Â
"This new visual identity projects pride to the entire Brown community," said Lisa Caputo '86, Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing and Communications Officer for The Travelers Companies, Inc. "The gravitas of the new logos marries together and generates enthusiasm in our community and athletics."
Â
The new design reflects the tradition of Brown's program. It establishes a link to the University's overall brand identity and colors.
Â
Facility upgrades with the new branding began immediately and will require a phased approach over the course of various sports seasons. The new marks will be used on signage, apparel, and products, along with digital and social media platforms,
Â
A website refresh is scheduled for later this summer.
Â
