Brown University quarterback coach Heather Marini has been selected to play for the Australian National Team at the 2022 IFAF World Championships. Marini, a quarterback, is among the final squad of 45 players announced to compete in the International Federation of American Football (IFAF) World Championships from July 28th through August 8th in Finland.
Eight teams have been confirmed to compete-Australia, Canada, Mexico, Sweden, Germany, Great Britain, reigning World Champion United States and defending European champion Finland. An Australian native herself, Marini's sights are set on helping Team Australia secure their first victory at the IFAF Championships.
"Heather's commitment to her football journey both as a player and as a coach is inspirational and I am very excited and honored to have her join our team," said Australian team head coach Kevin Wilson. "She brings a level of knowledge and experience that most Australians can only dream of and her contribution to the program both on and off the field will be invaluable."
Â
In 2020, Heather Marini became the first female position coach in Division-1 football after being appointed Quarterback Coach for Brown University. She previously coached and played for the Monash Warriors in Melbourne, Australia, and currently plays for the Boston Renegades in the Pro Division of the Women's Football Alliance (WFA). In 2021, Heather Marini completed the Bill Walsh Coaching Fellowship with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
"This is an incredible opportunity. I'm so grateful to be able to continue to play football at the highest level and I continue to be inspired by the team at Brown as well as my teammates at the Boston Renegades. My entire football career I've done things a little back to front and upside down, so to have this chance now to represent my country is very special," said Marini.
Female football players often rely on fundraising or pay their own costs; alongside the cost of competing for the Renegades this season, the estimated cost for participation in the World Championships is over $8,500. Heather has partnered with female artist, Liz Gridley, to design a t-shirt with a portion of sales going to offset the cost. Supporters can purchase from:
