Equestrian Trio Set for 2022 IHSA Zone 1 Championships

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Three members of the Brown equestrian team are set to compete in the 2022 IHSA Zone 1 Championships on Saturday at Mount Holyoke College Equestrian Center in South Hadley, Massachusetts.
Saturday's competition is set to begin at 9 a.m. and will stream on BoxCast.tv.
Samantha Weinerman will compete in the open flat and open fences divisions after finishing first and second, respectively, in those events at last weekend's regionals at Mystic Valley Hunt Club.
Weinerman enters Saturday after a strong spring season that earned her Reserve High Point Rider recognition three times: IHSA Regionals (Apr. 2), URI Show (Mar. 12), and URI Show (Feb. 19). The Chester, New Jersey native finished first in the open fences division twice and first in the open flat division twice this spring.
"This is my first season competing with Brown due to COVID during my freshman year and it has been such an amazing journey growing with the team and learning from our amazing coach, Michaela Scanlon," said Weinerman. "The camaraderie between our close-knit group of girls has been an unbelievable support system, the strength and conditioning coaches have put countless hours into helping us feel and perform our best, and the horses have put their all day in and day out. I feel so lucky to be able to compete for Brown and am looking forward to riding at Zones this weekend and finishing off the season strong!"
Alix Hamon and Grace Skavdahl are set to compete in the introductory flat division after finishing first and second, respectively, at last weekend's regionals.
Hamon took first in the introductory flat in two shows this spring and finished second in two other shows in the event. The Sandia Park, New Mexico native pointed out of the division at the URI Show (Mar. 12).
"I'm very excited for the opportunity to compete in zones this weekend, we've all been working hard this week to prepare," said Hamon. "Both the fall and the spring seasons had a lot of great energy for us and it was so nice to finally have the entire team back on campus for the first time since the pandemic ended our 2020 season early. I think we are all just really thankful to be here together and competing.
"We are all very supportive of each other, and that camaraderie definitely helped us close out the season strongly. Towards the end of the spring season, as a team, we really seemed to hit our stride. Our first-place finish at the Johnson & Wales show was a particular high. I'm really thankful for our coach Michaela Scanlon. We owe much of our success to her instruction and insight, and I feel so lucky to train under her. I know that she has helped me make a lot of improvements in my riding this season. It was already incredibly exciting when I qualified for regionals last month, so I'm honored that I now have the opportunity to advance to zones and represent Brown this weekend."
Skavdahl enters Saturday after finishing second in the introductory flat at last weekend's Regionals. At the URI Show (Mar. 12), the Harrison, Nebraska native finished first alongside Hamon to point out of the division.
"I'm really excited about the chance to compete at zones this weekend," said Skavdahl. "With a concussion and the beginning of the pandemic impacting my freshman spring, and with all the complications of the pandemic since, this has been my first full year of competition. It's been a great year, and it feels especially rewarding to have it all come together like this given the circumstances of the past two years."
Riders who advance from Saturday's Zone 1 Championships will compete in the IHSA National Finals at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg, Virginia from May 5 to 9.
Three Bears have qualified for the IHSA National Championships since 2014: Anna Seto (2017 – novice fences, 2018 – intermediate flat), Yinan Liu (2017 – walk-trot), and Kabisha Baughen (2014 – open fences).
