Equestrian Sees Three Qualify for IHSA Zone 1 Championships at Regionals on Saturday

GALES FERRY, Conn. – Samantha Weinerman (Chester, N.J.) was named Region 1 Reserve High Point Rider after finishing first in the open flat division and second in and open fences division at the 2022 IHSA Zone 1 Region 1 Finals on Saturday at Mystic Valley Hunt Club.
Weinerman began the competition with a second-place finish in the open fences division. She followed that performance with a first-place finish in the open flat to earn Reserve High Point Rider accolades.
Alix Hamon (Sandia Park, N.M.) and Grace Skavdahl (Harrison, Neb.) finished first and second, respectively, in the introductory flat division. Both riders will compete in next Saturday's Zone 1 Championships.
Elena Newman (Gainesville, Fla.) finished third in the upper level senior class and fourth in the limit flat to close her collegiate career on a high note.
Daphne Maniatis (Chevy Chase, Md.) took fourth in the novice flat division to close out her junior season. Maya Taylor (Albuquerque, N.M.) finished sixth in the lower level senior class
Hamon, Skavdahl, and Weinerman will compete in the IHSA Zone 1 Championships next Saturday (Apr. 9) at Mount Holyoke Equestrian Center in South Hadley, Massachusetts. Hamon and Skavdahl will compete in the introductory flat division while Weinerman will compete in the open flat and open fences divisions.
Jonna Batten (Sacramento, Calif.) and Ariana Zwern (Fair Oaks, Calif.) served as warm-up riders.
The equestrian program sends three Bears to the Zone 1 Championship, marking the fourth time in the last six seasons the program has sent at least three. A program-best six Bears qualified for the Zone 1 Championship in 2018.
Since 2014, three Bears have advanced past the Zone 1 Championships to qualify for the IHSA National Championship: Anna Seto (2017, 2018), Yinan Liu (2017), and Kabisha Baughen (2014).
