Strong Effort Helps Brown Upset Penn for Big Ivy League Win

Brown (3-4) stormed out to a 24-7 lead in the second quarter before the Quakers (6-1) rallied to take a 31-27 lead with just over six minutes remaining in the game. Smith scored what proved to be the game-winner on a nine-yard catch-and-run from quarterback Aidan Gilman with 1:19 left in regulation.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Brown outgained Penn 429-368, which included 360 yards through the air.
- Coming on in relief, Gilman was 22-for-38 for 245 yards and two touchdowns, all career-highs.
- Junior Jake Willcox started the game 14-for-15 for 115 yards and a touchdown before departing.
- Senior Wes Rockett caught seven passes for a career-high 138 yards, including 63 yards after the catch.
- Jordan McIntyre caught five balls for 57 yards, Graham Walker added 53 yards on five catches and one score, and Hayes Sutton caught five passes for 51 yards and a touchdown.
- Smith rushed for 38 yards and added nine more yards receiving, including the game-winning score.
- Senior Nate Lussier scored his first career touchdown on a three-yard run.
- Defensively, junior Aubrey Parker had a career-best nine tackles, sophomore Kaleb Ross posted eight tackles for a new career-high, and senior Josh Ofili tied his season-high with seven tackles and added one interception.
- Brown got a pair of sacks from seniors Sean Kelly and Junior Gafa.
- Sophomore Isaiah Reed finished with four tackles and three pass breakups.
- Brown converted two third downs on its opening drive en route to an 86-yard drive, capped by a two-yard touchdown pass in the back of the end zone to Sutton. Willcox completed 10 of his 11 passes on the drive.
- Coming on in relief, Gilman orchestrated a 14-play, 77-yard drive and capped it off with his first career touchdown pass, a 20-yard strike to Walker at 12:10 of the second quarter to put the Bears on top 14-0.
- Penn answered right back on the ensuing kickoff when Julien Stokes took it 97 yards to paydirt to cut the deficit in half, 14-7.
- Brown scored for the third time in as many possessions when Lussier scored his first career touchdown on a three-yard run up the middle to push the lead to 21-7 at the 6:10 mark of the second quarter.
- Ofili came away with his first career interception to end a lengthy Penn drive, which Brown turned into points as Austin Alley nailed a 35-yard field goal to push the lead to 24-7 Bears with 1:09 left until halftime.
- Willcox and Gilman combined to go 25-for-32 for 223 yards and two scores in the first half.
- Penn took advantage of some Brown miscues and short fields and scored 17 unanswered points to tie it at 24-24.
- After being held without a first down the entire third quarter, Brown converted two early in the fourth with a 15-yard pass to Walker on third down, then a 54-yarder to Rockett to set up first-and-goal. Alley connected on a 27-yard field goal to get the lead back, 27-24 with 12:25 to go.
- After a penalty, Penn took advantage of another short field and took the lead with a 35-yard touchdown drive, capped by a 12-yard run by Jonathan Mulatu to take their first lead, 31-27 with 6:09 left.
- Brown took over with 3:15 left and went on a nine-play, 69-yard drive, and scored the winning touchdown on a pass to Smith, who powered through tackles and into the end zone from nine yards out with 1:19 to go.
- Brown forced a turnover on downs with 33 seconds left, thanks to pass breakups by Cooper DeVeau, Ofili and Treyvon Hobbs.
The Bears will hit the road next Saturday for a showdown at Yale on Saturday, November 5 at noon. The game will be televised live on NESN and streamed on ESPN+.
