PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Three Brown Bears notched double figures in kills as women's volleyball swept Bryant 3-0 in Tuesday's home opener at the Pizzitola Sports Center. Kate Sheire led the Bears with 11 kills, followed by Beau Vanderlaan and Zoe Ubamadu with 10 apiece. Cierra Jenkins tallied 36 assists and Jilienne Widener added eight kills and three block assists. Brown tallied a .301 hitting percentage, while limiting a strong Bryant squad to just a .101 clip, less than half their season average.
The victory moves the Bears to 3-1 on the season while Bryant drops to 4-3.
"In the first set we managed the game a little better than the other team and made less errors," head coach Ahen Kim said. "We got a couple blocks early which was helpful. We forced them into making errors by blocking, and we were able to manage the match well from there. Cierra (Jenkins) did a good job in set two getting everyone involved and helped our team to a good hitting percentage."
The two teams traded points through the first half of set one. With the score tied at 14, Brown used a kill by Sheire and an ace from Kaitlyn Wong to score four unanswered and take the lead for good at 18-14. A pair of attack errors followed by a kill from Ubamadu finished off the set and a 25-19 Brown victory.
The Bears dominated the second set, pounding out 18 kills for a .484 attack percentage. A pair of 3-0 runs gave Brown a 13-9 lead, and consecutive block assists by Vo and Vanderlaan made it 20-13. Widener added a pair of kills and Ubamadu once again finished off the set with a kill for another 25-19 victory, giving the Bears a 2-0 lead in the match.
"One of our goals going into this match was to hunt for some blocks early," Kim said. "We thought if we did that, we could force them into some errors. I'm really proud of our players who did a good job getting blocks and that put more pressure on Bryant."
Bryant took the lead early in the third set, holding two-point advantages on two separate occasions. Trailing 12-10 after a timeout, a pair of attack errors and a kill from Sheire pushed the Bears in front 13-12, but Bryant pulled ahead once more, eventually holding an 18-16 lead. Brown fought back with five unanswered points to take the lead for good, highlighted by two kills from Vanderlaan and one from Widener. Bryant clawed within one point once again, but three straight Bear points, capped by a Sheire kill, finished off the sweep with a 25-21 set three victory.
Brown returns to action this Friday at the Rutgers Invitational, where they will take on NC State on Friday at 2 p.m.
