
Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month 2021: Alai Nuualiitia ’03, Men’s Basketball

Throughout the month of May, Brown Athletics will celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month through a series of profiles. Over the course of the month, the Bears will recognize Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders who have made an impact on the university community and beyond.
Alai Nuualiitia '03, Men's Basketball
Alai Nuualiitia '03 was a complete post player who was always there for his teammates, appearing in all 110 possible contests. In his final year, he helped guide the Bears to a NIT berth after a school best 12-2 record in conference action and a then program best 17 overall victories. A Biology concentrator, Nuualiitia currently ranks in the top 10 in six career statistical categories. His 1,344 career points rank eighth while he also stands in third in blocked shots (119), fifth in field goal percentage (.557), eighth in both rebounds (710) and field goals made (486), and ninth in free throws made (362). Nuualiitia holds three of the top 10 field goal percentages for a season, ranking second with a .617 average during the 2002-03 season and also sixth (.576, 2000-01) and seventh (.572, 2001-02). He led the Ivy League in field goal percentage for three-straight seasons, shooting 62-percent as a senior. Nuualiitia was named the Ivy League Rookie of the Week five times as a freshman, leading the Bears in rebounding, blocks and steals. As a sophomore, he was a Second Team All-Ivy selection and earned Brown's Stan Ward Award, given to the player, who, in a quiet and unobtrusive way, contributes the most to the team. A co-captain as a senior, he earned the Rusty Tyler Coaches Award, given to the member of the team who, through total dedication and loyalty, has given the most of himself for the good of the team. He was also selected First Team All-Ivy as a senior. Nuualiitia was named to Brown's All-Time Team at the 100th Anniversary Celebration of Brown Basketball and is a member of the Brown Athletic Hall of Fame (2018 inductee).
