PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown University Department of Athletics and Physical Education has received University approval to move into Ivy Phase Four, which allows for local competition. Spring sport intercollegiate student-athletes may participate in sport-specific practice activity and competition, as permitted by campus policies and subject to contest approval. Brown spring teams are permitted to compete against local institutions beginning on Saturday, April 3.
"We are excited to advance to Phase IV and resume competition in a manner consistent with Brown's COVID-19 campus safety policies and institutional standards," Colin Sullivan, Deputy Director of Athletics said. "As a department, we have been steadfast in our commitment to providing a healthy and safe environment in our practices, athletic training, and strength and conditioning activities. The opportunity to compete this spring is a direct result of everyone's efforts this semester."
The NCAA Division I Council recently approved a waiver that Ivy League student-athletes who compete this spring will not use a year of eligibility, provided the student-athlete competes in less than 30 percent of the maximum permissible contests/dates of competition in their sport and does not compete in individual or team postseason competition.
Spectators are not permitted to attend home events at Brown University, and attendance at away events and competitions will be dictated by the host institution. Video streaming will be produced by the Brown Bears Sports Network and available for most home events.
