Throughout the month of February, Brown Athletics will celebrate Black History Month through a series of profiles. Over the course of the month, the Bears will recognize African Americans who have made an impact on the university community and beyond.
Sarah Hayes '06, Women's Basketball
The 2006 Ivy League Player of the Year, Sarah Hayes '06 helped lead the Bears to the 2006 Ivy League title. She earned All-Ivy honors all four years, including First Team accolades in 2005 and 2006 and Honorable Mention laurels in 2003 and 2004. Hayes captured the Ivy League Rookie of the Year award in 2003 and also landed a spot on the Ivy League All-Rookie Team. She collected Team MVP honors in 2003, 2005, and 2006. She stands as the seventh all-time leading scorer in program history with 1,377 points. In the Brown record book, she also ranks second in career games started (108), third in career steals (266), and fourth in career field goal percentage (.476). A 2005 and 2006 Academic All-Ivy recipient, she won the team's Hustle Award (2003, 2004, 2005), Defensive Spark Award (2005), and Harriet Sheridan Leadership Award (2006). During her four seasons, she helped the Bears compile a 67-42 overall record and 40-16 Ivy League mark with top-three Ivy finishes in all four seasons. After graduation, Hayes played professionally for USC Freiburg Eisvoegel in Germany from 2006-11 before serving as an assistant women's basketball coach at Carnegie Mellon from 2011-13. After acting as a social studies teacher and the girls' varsity basketball coach at Battery Creek High School in Beaufort, S.C., from 2013-19, she became Battery Creek's Director of Athletics in 2019.
