Throughout the month of February, Brown Athletics will celebrate Black History Month through a series of profiles. Over the course of the month, the Bears will recognize African Americans who have made an impact on the university community and beyond.
Judith Gracey '81, Women's Track & Field
A member of the Brown Athletic Hall of Fame, Judith Gracey '81 was an exceptionally well-rounded athlete in track & field, winning a number of different sprint events, and setting several records along the way. While at Brown, Gracey solidified her legacy by winning five Heptagonal Championships and a New England Championship. Despite coming to Brown without being recruited, Gracey made an immediate impact in her freshman season in 1978. She captured her first Heptagonal Championship in the 100-yard dash of that year and, along with three teammates, followed with another championship in the 4x400 relay. Gracey was back in the winner's circle in 1980, leading the Bears to their first team championship in program history. She also won the long jump at Heps and went on to capture the individual New England Championship in the 200 meters. Gracey repeated as the long jump champion at Heps in 1981 and captured the 100-meter title, her fifth Heps crown in four seasons. At the time of her graduation, Gracey held school records in the 100, 200, and long jump. Following her time at Brown, Gracey went to law school at the University of Cincinnati. Gracey later went into private practice, where she worked for a personal injury firm for a year before starting her own practice in 1990. She now maintains her own general law firm, which handles personal injury, probate and estates, sports and entertainment, commercial and criminal law.
