Men's basketball falls to Bryant despite career rebounding effort from Choh
11/26/2021 5:11:00 PM | Men's Basketball
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – A career-high twenty-one rebounds by Tamenang Choh was not enough to overcome Bryant as the Bears fell 65-59 Friday afternoon. Choh's 21 boards were the most by a Bear in a single game since 1975.
"That was a difficult loss to a very good team," head coach Mike Martin said. "Congratulations to Bryant, we have great respect for them. They were better than us in the second half. When you play them, you have to do a good job of defending the three-point line and not turning the ball over. We turned it over too much all game, and in the second half we gave up six threes.
"We thought we had an advantage inside and we wanted to hammer the offensive glass and get the ball inside. I thought we got a ton of good looks in there, they just didn't go in. Credit to them.
"It was a good win for them and a tough loss for us. It's a long year and we'll continue ot learn from it."
As a team, Brown out rebounded Bryant 50-32, including a 22-5 advantage in offensive boards. Dan Friday led Brown with 17 points. Choh contributed nine points to go with his 21 rebounds. Jaylan Gainey had nine points and three blocks. Kimo Ferrari led the Bears with two three-pointers and three steals.
Brown led by three at halftime and by as much as seven during the second half, but it wasn't enough to hold on in the end.
The Bears went up by 10 halfway through the first half on an Aaron Cooley layup, and again on a jumper by David Mitchell. At 21-11, the Bulldogs scored eight of the next 10 points to shrink Brown's lead to four at 23-19.
A layup by Friday with 26 seconds in the half pushed the Bears' advantage back to five, but a jumper by Peter Kiss with one second on the board brought it to 30-27.
Brown took its largest lead of the second half at 47-40 at the 9:10 mark after a jumper by Friday, but a 15-2 run by Bryant over the next five minutes flipped the game and put the Bulldogs up 55-49 with four and a half minutes to play.
The Bears got it back to within one at 55-54 after a pair of free throws by Ferrari, but nine of the next 11 points went to Bryant to all but seal the victory for the road team.
Ferrari hit a late three with ten seconds remaining to cut the deficit to five, but it was too late.
Brown will travel to Quinnipiac for a 4 p.m. matchup this Sunday, Nov. 28.
