Volleyball downed by USC, 3-0

LOS ANGELES – Brown volleyball lost the USC in three sets on Monday (Nov. 22). Sophia Miller and Beau Vanderlaan led the offense for the Bears.
Vanderlaan and Miller each finished the match with seven kills. Kate Sheire added six kills and Gabby Derrick finished with five. Cierra Jenkins guided the offense with 27 assists and finished the game with a double-double, adding 10 digs.
On defense, Victoria Vo led the way with 13 digs and Miller was second on the team with 11. Derrick led the defense at the net with three blocks. Vanderlaan and Jilienne Widener each had two blocks.
In the first meeting between Brown and USC, the offense for Brown hit just .135 against the Pac-12 foe. USC hit .276 for the match as a team.
Brown jumped ahead early in the first set 6-2 and were up 10-8 after a kill by Jenkins. The set shifted with a 9-2 run by the Trojans to jump ahead 17-12 but the Bears weren't done battling. A 5-1 run with two kills by Sheire and one by Vanderlaan made the score 18-17 in favor of USC, but the Trojans responded with a 3-0 run. A kill by Miller made the score 22-19 but USC rattled off three-straight points to win the set.
An early 6-0 run put USC up 8-2 and the Trojans went up 13-5 before Brown made a bit of a run. A kill and ace by Widener bookended the run that made the score 13-9 but USC scored six of the next seven points to take control of the set and took set two 25-16.
Brown's best offensive performance of the night came in set three as the Bears hit .364. Kills by Miller, Sheire and Derrick put Brown up 5-1 early. Vo's service ace made the score 7-2 in favor of the Bears who kept the Trojans at bay as USC tried to battle back. With the score 12-9, Jenkins added a kill, Widener and Derrick teamed for a block and Miller picked up an ace to put Brown up 15-9.
USC tried to climb back into the set but Vanderlaan responded with a kill to keep Brown ahead 18-16. The Trojans finally broke through with a 6-1 run to go ahead 22-19 before Widener stopped the run with a kill. After trading points with a kill by Derrick, Brown was down 23-21 but USC closed out the set with two-straight points.
Brown will now wait for Nov. 28 to find out its opponent for the First Round of the NCAA Tournament.
