NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Brown water polo picked up a 15-12 win over Iona to move to 1-1 in Northeast Water Polo Conference play. Nine Bears tallied a goal in the win over the Gaels.
Both Connor Enright and Leo Berkman each collected a hat trick to lead the team. Filip Aleksic and Nick Berry finished the game with two goals.
Ugo Piovan finished with seven saves, allowing just four goals. Joe Gallagher also spent time in goal, finishing with four saves.
"I'm glad we were able to pick up a win today," said head coach Felix Mercado. "The team is responding well to what we need to do to continue to get better. Next week will be important for us."
Iona scored the first three goals of the game before Cole Atwell got the Bears on the board. Aleksic and Enright added goals of their own to tie the game but Iona scored 20 second later to go up 4-3. The Bears knotted up the game with two seconds left in the quarter after Ben Kirshon scored a goal.
Quarter two belonged to the Bears with Brown outscoring Iona 5-2. Iona scored the first goal but Berkman and Enright quickly gave Brown the lead. Berkman's second goal of the game put Brown up 7-5 and after the Gaels scored a goal, Aleksic and Anderson Todd scored 30 seconds apart to put Brown up 9-6 at halftime.
Iona pulled within one twice during the third quarter but Brown always had an answer. Berry scored to make the game 10-8 and Gabe Chang pushed the lead to 11-9. Berkman scored another goal, followed by Andrew Penner to make the lead 13-9.
Berry and Enright each tallied fourth quarter goals as the Bears kept the Gaels at bay on their way to the win.
Brown will travel to Cambridge next Saturday (Oct. 9) for conference games against MIT and Harvard.
